{"id":682785,"date":"2026-01-08T18:36:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T18:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/682785\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T18:36:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T18:36:11","slug":"glasgow-city-council-made-to-compensate-man-hit-by-lamppost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/682785\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow City Council made to compensate man hit by lamppost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Colin Shaw was left with life-changing injuries after the lamppost struck him in June 2023.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The council admitted liability at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25749915.scottish-activist-appears-court-palestine-action-terror-charge\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow Sheriff Court<\/a> on Thursday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In a statement released through law firm Digby Brown, Shaw said: \u201cThis accident has had a huge impact on my life and I am pleased it has now come to a conclusion.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI now request privacy as I continue my recovery and rehabilitation.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25750201.hands-off-scotlands-greenland-warning-donald-trump\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8216;Hands off&#8217;: Scotland&#8217;s Greenland in warning to Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25691704.glasgow-regeneration-fund-falls-flat-one-successful-bid-backed\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow City Council<\/a> apologised for the harm caused to Shaw, and said the authority will invest \u00a37.5 million in the coming years to replace outdated and damaged lampposts in the city.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The spokesperson said: \u201cWe are very sorry for this incident and the harm this has caused to Mr Shaw. We accept the lighting column referred to in this case was not properly inspected.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cFollowing this incident, our approach to the maintenance of the city street lighting network has been updated and improved.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe now undertake a more thorough risk assessment of lighting columns, a new mapping system has been developed to help us manage the system more effectively, and we have also introduced a dedicated inspection team.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe council has also allocated an additional \u00a37.5m to allow the replacement of lighting columns across the city over the next three years.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25750837.uk-nurses-urge-union-avoid-israel-linked-investments\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UK nurses urge union to avoid Israel-linked investments<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Debbie Carroll, who leads on health and safety investigations at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: \u201cThis incident could easily have proved fatal and has irrevocably changed a man\u2019s life.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt could have been avoided if the maintenance system in place at the time had been more robust in ensuring a full visual inspection of lighting assessed to be in poor condition.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cBy failing to do so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/glasgow-city-council\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow City Council<\/a> left the public facing unacceptable risk.
