European leaders and US envoys announced this week that postwar guarantees for Ukraine would include a US-led monitoring mechanism and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/06\/uk-france-ready-to-deploy-troops-to-ukraine-after-ceasefire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European multinational force<\/a> to be deployed once the fighting stops. But Moscow has repeatedly warned it would not accept any Nato members sending such troops to Ukraine. \u201cAll such units and facilities will be considered legitimate military targets for the Russian armed forces,\u201d Russia\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said on Thursday, repeating a threat previously made by Vladimir Putin. Describing the plan as \u201cdangerous\u201d and \u201cdestructive\u201d, she accused Kyiv\u2019s allies of forming an \u201caxis of war\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>German chancellor Friedrich Merz said a ceasefire in Ukraine was still \u201cquite far\u201d away given Russia\u2019s position<\/strong>. \u201cThe order must be: first a ceasefire, then security guarantees for Ukraine for a long-term agreement with Russia,\u201d Merz told reporters on Thursday. \u201cAll of this is impossible without Russia\u2019s consent, which we are probably still quite far from.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The US embassy in Kyiv warned on Thursday that a \u201cpotentially significant air attack\u201d could occur at any time within the next several days<\/strong>. Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed the warning in his evening address, telling Ukrainians that \u201cthere may be another massive Russian attack\u201d during the night, without elaborating. \u201cIt is very important to pay attention to air raid alerts,\u201d the Ukrainian president added, advising Ukrainians to take shelter when asked.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>An Anglo-French led stabilisation force for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> would have to deploy thousands of combat troops if it is to successfully dissuade Russia from breaking a post-war ceasefire, according to a former commanding general of the US army in Europe<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/08\/coalition-of-the-willing-must-be-robust-to-deal-with-russia-warns-ex-us-general\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports Dan Sabbagh<\/a>. The mayor, Vitali Klitschko, also reported damage to a building in a central district.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Data indicates there had been a major disruption to internet connectivity in Belgorod, western Russia, after Ukrainian forces targeted the region\u2019s energy installations<\/strong> with missiles, according to NetBlocks. The monitoring organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/netblocks\/status\/2009385305648861455\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">posted on X<\/a> on Friday that \u201cinitial analysis suggests one of the most effective infrastructure strikes by Ukraine since the start of the war\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Ukrainian officials raced to restore power on Thursday after Russian drone attacks plunged two south-eastern regions into near-total blackout overnight<\/strong>, strikes that Zelenskyy said were at attempt \u201cto break\u201d his country. Nearly 500,000 households in the industrialised region of Dnipropetrovsk \u2013 one of Ukraine\u2019s largest \u2013 were still without power on Thursday afternoon, according to private energy provider DTEK. Deputy prime minister Oleksiy Kuleba said earlier that more than 1.7 million households in Ukraine faced water supply problems.
