Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade has revealed the ‘special’ reaction of Magpies supporters towards him in the aftermath of last month’s derby defeat to Sunderland<\/a> has convinced him he is ‘in the right place’.<\/p>\n

Woltemade’s own goal unfortunately proved to be the difference as Sunderland ran out 1-0 winners after the German international forward headed the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old has admitted he is still devastated about the manner of Newcastle’s <\/a>defeat but the messages he received from supporters in the immediate aftermath of the game on Wearside gave him a huge boost.<\/p>\n

Opening up on that day, Woltemade<\/a> has described the support from Newcastle fans as ‘not normal’ and not the reaction he was expecting.<\/p>\n

“When I scored the own goal, I didn’t know how people would react because of course it’s the most important game for the fans,” Woltemade told Newcastle’s matchday programme ahead of their Premier League match against Leeds United.<\/p>\n

“When I came to the dressing room I was really sad and then I looked at my phone and already had good messages. No one was blaming me, after this moment the feeling was really bad but the fans made it easier for me.<\/p>\n

“Of course I’m still really sad about it, especially in this game that I couldn’t give it to the fans after what they gave me in the first weeks and months.<\/p>\n

“But when I came on against Fulham, this reaction is not normal, it’s special. I was hoping for the reaction but I never expected it.<\/p>\n

“I like this special environment, everyone was screaming my name and my songs after what happened. I can only really say thank you to the fans for this and it gives me a good feeling that I’m in the right place.”<\/p>\n
