Coming our way is <strong>Storm Goretti<\/strong>, which along with some hefty snow and wind, will bring with it some disruption, which we\u2019re not entirely unfamiliar with in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re currently experiencing the calm before the storm, but once we\u2019re in it, you might want to batten down the hatches. Turning more unsettled from the south by the evening with rain, hill snow and stronger winds. Maximum temperature 5 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p> Tonight <\/p>\n<p>Storm Goretti arriving in the south during the evening and overnight bringing heavy rain, hill snow and strong winds. Drier in Cumbria but staying cloudy. Minimum temperature 0 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p> Friday (9 January) <\/p>\n<p><strong>Heavy rain and snow<\/strong>, mainly over the hills, clearing eastwards through Friday leaving wintry showers behind. Remaining cold with winds gradually easing. Maximum temperature 5 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p> Outlook for Saturday (10 Jan) to Monday (11 Jan) <\/p>\n<p>A<strong> cold weekend<\/strong> with overnight frost. Mostly dry and bright on Saturday and to start on Sunday. The snow will continue<strong> through the night until around 3am<\/strong>, setting things up for a cold and snowy start to Friday (9th January).<\/p>\n<p> What public transport will be disrupted by Storm Goretti? <\/p>\n<p>Of course, many (if not most) people rely on public transport to get around Greater Manchester, and with the storm set to hit key train lines, there will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/storm-goretti-trains-cancelled-north-west-manchester\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/secretmanchester.com\/storm-goretti-trains-cancelled-north-west-manchester\/\" data-action=\"text_cta_5\" data-category=\"click_internal\">fair bit of disruption<\/a>. The <strong>Hope Valley line<\/strong> connecting Manchester to Sheffield will be<strong> closed from 6pm on Thursday 8th January<\/strong>, so no trains will be running until at least Friday evening, if not Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trams<\/strong> on the<strong> Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton lines<\/strong> are most likely to be disrupted by the weather as are<strong> buses in the north and east of the city-region<\/strong>. Transport for Greater Manchester is urging people planning to travel this evening to check the latest information on the Bee Network app or <a href=\"https:\/\/tfgm.com\/storm-goretti\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"shortcode-outbound-link\" data-has-ga=\"true\" data-ga-type=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/tfgm.com\/storm-goretti\" data-action=\"text_cta_6\" data-category=\"click_non_sales\">website<\/a> before they travel, leave extra time and if possible to travel before 5pm, when the storm is expected to hit.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-84138\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"storm goretti trains cancelled north west\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/storm-goretti-trains.jpg\"\/>Credit: Network Rail <\/p>\n<p>Due to the expected impact, no trains will run on the following routes from 6pm this evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New Mills Central \u2013 Sheffield <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hazel Grove \u2013 Buxton<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Guide Bridge \u2013 Glossop\/Hadfield<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All train companies have put out warnings with some definite cancellations and other delays, so do check before you travel.
