We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 cglitp\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of schools will remain closed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/snow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice<\/a> brought by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/storm-goretti-uk-weather-snow-met-office-b2895848.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Storm Goretti<\/a> continue to cause disruption across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Met Office has issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/storm-goretti-live-uk-weather-warnings-snow-met-office-travel-b2897284.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yellow warning of snow and ice<\/a> covering much of Scotland, which runs until midday on Friday, among six other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/storm-goretti-map-weather-bomb-uk-met-office-b2897286.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yellow and amber weather warnings<\/a> across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>More than 250 schools are due to remain closed on Friday, including more than 150 in Aberdeenshire, dozens in the Highlands and Aberdeen, and a number in Moray.<\/p>\n<p>Many pupils will have had a whole week off school at the start of the new term, though remote learning has been provided in many cases.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 278 schools were closed on Thursday across northern Scotland, or around 11 per cent, which is down on the 440 that were closed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A yellow snow and ice warning remains in place across Scotland until midday. Freezing conditions have caused ice and around 2 to 5cm of fresh snow accumulations are expected in western Scotland, and hills in northern England.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can check the status of your child\u2019s school here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>It comes after several days of \u201cintense\u201d snowfall, ice and sub-zero temperatures which have led to school closures and travel disruption, mainly in the north of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Storm Goretti, named by the French meteorological service, has meanwhile brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/storm-goretti-weather-alert-wind-rain-power-cuts-b2897143.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peak gusts of 99mph to the Isles of Scilly<\/a> and as much as 30cm of snow to parts of the UK. The Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for wind in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Travel has been affected all week, with a number of flights cancelled, and some train lines affected. British Airways has cancelled 25 departures and 27 arrivals scheduled to operate at London\u2019s Heathrow airport on Friday. West Midlands Railway said it has suspended all services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are unable to operate any services until the afternoon,\u201d it said. No rail replacement road transport is being provided because of \u201cuncertain road conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>London Northwestern Railway said it has suspended services between Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street until Friday afternoon. Its services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston are reduced.<\/p>\n<p>But as much of the country is impacted by ice, authorities have asked pedestrians and motorists to be careful on slippery surfaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-07-12-13.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A number of weather warnings remain in place\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>A number of weather warnings remain in place (Met Office)<\/p>\n<p>Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said the storm will bring \u201cwet, windy and wintry weather\u201d to parts of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>He said Storm Goretti, named by Meteo France, would bring \u201csome strong winds and some significant snow to central and perhaps southern parts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The meteorologist added: \u201cAs that rain pushes its way and it hits against that cold air that we currently have across us\u2026 and so on the northern edge, we are likely to see some fairly significant snow as we go through later tomorrow and into Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials in the West Midlands have warned of the \u201cworst snowfall in a decade\u201d as parts of England and Wales prepare to be hit with 5 to 10cm of snow on Friday, and up to 15 to 25cm in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended amber cold health alerts for England as an early warning that adverse temperatures are likely to affect health and wellbeing, running until Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-05-at-08-11-50.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The UK Health Security Agency has also issued an amber cold health alert\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>The UK Health Security Agency has also issued an amber cold health alert (UKHSA)<\/p>\n<p>Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, urged people to check in on vulnerable friends, family and neighbours earlier this week. He warned: \u201cThe forecast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/temperatures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperatures<\/a> can have a serious impact on the health of some people, leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, particularly for individuals over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National Highways issued its own amber warning for snow in the West and East Midlands, which lasts from 6pm on Thursday until 9am on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said in a statement: \u201cRoutes particularly around Birmingham across to Leicester and Nottingham will see particularly difficult driving conditions and consideration of the weather forecast should be taken before commencing journeys, with considerable delays possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI279848056.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Snow has been causing disruption across the UK this week\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Snow has been causing disruption across the UK this week (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The agency said on Friday morning the A628 Woodhead Pass connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire remains closed in both directions between the A616 for Flouch and the A57 for Hollingworth because of snow.
