Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>\u00a0has shared a\u00a0David Byrne<\/a>\u00a0cover of \u2018Drivers\u00a0License\u2019 and announced a vinyl reissue\u00a0to mark\u00a0the\u00a0single\u2019s\u00a0fifth anniversary.<\/p>\n

The song was first released on this date (January 8) in 2021, the debut single for Rodrigo and the first taste of her debut album \u2018Sour<\/a>\u2019. The song topped charts around the world and broke the\u00a0Spotify<\/a>\u00a0record for the most single-day streams for a non-holiday song.<\/p>\n

To mark its fifth birthday, Rodrigo has shared a cover of the song by the\u00a0Talking Heads <\/a>frontman\u00a0and her former collaborator Byrne. In an Instagram post, she described Byrne as \u201cone of my all-time heroes\u201d,\u00a0saying: \u201cI\u00a0actually cried\u00a0when I heard his version of this song\u201d.<\/p>\n

The cover is described as the first in a series of covers to mark the fifth anniversary of \u2018Sour\u2019,\u00a0and it will be released on a special edition\u00a0translucent ruby\u00a07\u201d, which fans can order\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The B-side of that single will include the live version of Talking Heads\u2019 \u2018Burning Down The House\u2019 which Rodrigo and Byrne performed during the\u00a0former\u2019s\u00a0headline set at New York\u2019s Governors Ball last summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rodrigo shared another Instagram post celebrating the anniversary of \u2018Drivers License\u2019. \u201cHappy 5 years of drivers license!!!\u201d she wrote. \u201cLooking back at these pics I feel like I look like a baby but it also feels like just yesterday lol. this song has totally changed my life in ways I still can\u2019t totally wrap my head around. I\u2019m forever grateful for this magical chapter and I can\u2019t wait to scream red lights stop signs with u guys at every concert I play for the rest of my life! happy birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n

After their Governors Ball appearance together,\u00a0Byrne later hailed Rodrigo\u2019s \u201cgreat relationship with her audience\u201d<\/a>,\u00a0saying that \u201cnot only do they know the songs,\u00a0they\u00a0mean something to them\u201d.<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0spoke to Rodrigo a few months after the success of \u2018Drivers License\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0her performance at the 2021 BRIT Awards<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely mind-blowing to me\u201d,\u00a0she said. \u201cI was so nervous rehearsing for it and my team were like, \u2018It\u2019s fine, there\u2019s just going to be 45 people\u2019 and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like, \u2018Yeah but the 45 people are going to be\u00a0Harry Styles<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Dua Lipa<\/a>; that\u2019s so scary!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodrigo has recently been speaking about finding inspiration from\u00a0The Cure<\/a>,\u00a0New Order <\/a>and\u00a0Joy Division<\/a>, having been\u00a0joined by Cure\u00a0frontman\u00a0Robert Smith during her headline set at Glastonbury 2025<\/a>\u00a0for versions of \u2018Friday I\u2019m In Love\u2019 and \u2018Just Like Heaven\u2019.<\/p>\n

She also\u00a0covered The White Stripes\u2019 \u2018We\u2019re Going To Be Friends\u2019 at the band\u2019s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony<\/a>\u00a0in November, the same month that\u00a0she slammed the White House for using her music in a promotion video for ICE<\/a>.<\/p>\n
