{"id":684750,"date":"2026-01-09T15:33:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T15:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/684750\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T15:33:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T15:33:13","slug":"x-uk-revenues-drop-nearly-60-in-a-year-as-content-concerns-spook-advertisers-x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/684750\/","title":{"rendered":"X UK revenues drop nearly 60% in a year as content concerns spook advertisers | X"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">UK revenues at Elon Musk\u2019s X fell by almost 60% in a year as advertisers pulled their spending over concerns about the social media platform\u2019s content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">News of the plummeting financial performance comes after X <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jan\/09\/grok-image-generator-outcry-sexualised-ai-imagery\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switched off<\/a> the image creation function on its AI tool Grok for the vast majority of users after a widespread outcry about its use to create sexually explicit and violent imagery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the UK, the social media site recorded a 58.3% fall in revenues from \u00a369.1m in 2023 to \u00a328.9m last year, according to the latest financial figures published at Companies House covering the year to 31 December 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pre-tax profits plunged from \u00a32.2m to \u00a3767,000 year-on-year. That contrasts with \u00a38.5m in pre-tax profits in 2022, the year Musk took control of the site then known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe significant decrease in the performance of the company is a result of the decline of advertising revenue primarily driven by a reduction in spend from large brand advertisers due to concerns about brand safety, reputation and\/or content moderation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/twitter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe business continues to take proactive measures to build brand safety tools, invest in platform safety and content moderation and then educate advertisers about these initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/apr\/25\/twitter-elon-musk-buy-takeover-deal-tesla\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">completed his $44bn takeover<\/a> of the platform at the end of 2022, the social media company\u2019s commercial performance has plummeted and 80% of UK staff have been cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Total staff numbers in the UK fell by a third last year, from 114 to 76 \u2013 compared with a workforce of 399 when Musk took over. X said that from the point of acquisition until the end of last year, it had recognised more than \u00a322m in redundancy costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an onstage interview at an event in New York in 2023, Musk told advertisers who had pulled money from X over his endorsement of an antisemitic tweet to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/29\/elon-musk-hurls-defiant-profanity-laced-retort-at-fleeing-advertisers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgo fuck yourself\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Months later the billionaire went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/aug\/06\/elon-musk-x-advertising-lawsuit-antitrust\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sue major companies<\/a> including Unilever, the Marmite-to-Dove conglomerate, accusing them of unlawfully conspiring in a \u201cmassive advertiser boycott\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Musk dropped Unilever from the lawsuit in 2024, but others \u2013 including the food and consumer goods groups Mars, Nestl\u00e9 and Colgate-Palmolive \u2013 are still being pursued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Despite ongoing issues with content across the platform, X claims in its accounts that it has become the \u201cplatform of choice for world-changing conversations, events and breaking news, ranging from presidential elections, to the latest developments in AI, to international sports events\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company said that following Musk\u2019s takeover it had taken \u201csignificant steps to reduce its cost base and improve its financial performance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The site\u2019s Grok AI tool was restricted on Friday after Musk was threatened with fines, regulatory action and amid reports of a possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jan\/09\/grok-ai-create-sexually-violent-videos-featuring-women-research-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban on X in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The tool had been used to manipulate images of women to remove their clothes and put them in sexualised positions.
