The new Whitecraig Primary School in East Lothian<\/p>\n

Whitecraig Primary pupils have started the New Year in a new school.<\/p>\n
Staff were on hand on Wednesday to welcome children to their new school which has been developed on land adjacent to the previous building.<\/p>\n
The new school provides a striking landmark at the village\u2019s western edge with its charcoal grey brick exterior, copper-coloured cladding and accents and sawtooth-shaped roof. <\/p>\n
The building has eight classrooms and an Early Years centre to meet demand from a growing school population in the area. A new signalised junction with Whitecraig Road was included as part of the project to create a safer route for cyclists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n
Colours, textures and finishes inside create calming and nurturing spaces that aims to reflect the area\u2019s local history and landscape with ample references to the natural world. <\/p>\n
East Lothian Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Education and Children\u2019s and Family Services Councillor Fiona Dugdale said: <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a momentous day for the whole Whitecraig community. The closeness of the new school to the existing building has meant that children have been able to keep a close eye on the project\u2019s progress and excitement has been growing as it has neared completion. Being able to step inside their new school and claim it as their own is exciting for them and for staff.<\/p>\n
\u201cCongratulations to all of the teams who have been involved in delivering a new Whitecraig Primary School. With modern, efficient spaces fit for high quality learning and teaching, it will benefit the village now and for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project received funding from phase one of the Scottish Government\u2019s Learning Estate Investment Programme, administered by Scottish Future\u2019s Trust. Morrison Construction was awarded the \u00a318.5m contact in February 2024 following a competitive tender process. <\/p>\n
Whitecraig Primary School Head Teacher Viv Short said: <\/p>\n
\u201cOpening the doors of our new building at Whitecraig Primary School is a truly special moment for us all. It represents not just new walls and classrooms, but new possibilities for our children \u2013 spaces where curiosity can flourish, confidence can grow and every young person can be supported to be the best they can be.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhitecraig Primary School has always been at the heart of its community, and our new building strengthens that connection, providing a welcoming place for families, partners and neighbours to come together. We are immensely proud of this next chapter and deeply thankful to everyone who has helped make it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Work has now begun to disconnect and safely demolish the old school building before the ground is landscaped.<\/p>\n
