Credit: Tony Prave   <img decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kerry-taylor-smith.jpg\" alt=\"Kerry Taylor-Smith\" width=\"40\" height=\"40\"\/>    <a class=\"nombre text-hv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yourweather.co.uk\/author\/kerry-taylor-smith\/\" title=\"Kerry Taylor-Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerry Taylor-Smith<\/a>       02\/05\/2025 14:00   3 min   <\/p>\n<p>Scientists have <strong>rewritten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourweather.co.uk\/weather-Europe-United+Kingdom-Central+Scotland-1-1-48-12912.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"cuerpo_intext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a>\u2019s geological history<\/strong> after discovering that a meteorite that struck the northwestern part of the country actually <strong>occurred 200 million years later than previously thought<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The billion-year-old impact created the Stac Fada Member, a layer of rock that holds <strong>vital clues to Earth\u2019s ancient past <\/strong>and changes our understanding of the conditions during the <strong>development of non-marine life on Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Crystal clues<\/p>\n<p>Tiny zircon crystals \u2013 geological time capsules \u2013 were to <strong>date the impact to 990 million years ago<\/strong>, rather than the previously thought 1.2 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese microscopic crystals <strong>recorded the exact moment of impact<\/strong>, with some even transforming into an incredibly rare mineral called reidite, which only <strong>forms under extreme pressures<\/strong>,\u201d explains Dr Chris Kirkland from the Frontier Institute for Geoscience Solutions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curtin University<\/a> in Western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourweather.co.uk\/weather-Oceania-Australia-1-2-28.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"cuerpo_intext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"imagen \" href=\"https:\/\/www.yourweather.co.uk\/news\/science\/ancient-rocks-may-hold-information-surrounding-dark-matter.html\" title=\"Ancient rocks may hold information surrounding dark matter \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"low\" class=\"lazy img-body non-editable\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ancient-rocks-may-hold-information-surrounding-dark-matter-1731444475978_320.jpg\"  width=\"320\" height=\"225\" alt=\"Ancient rocks may hold information surrounding dark matter \"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis provided <strong>undeniable proof<\/strong> that a meteorite strike caused the Stac Fada deposit. When a meteorite hits, it partially resets the atomic clocks inside the zircon crystals and these \u2018broken timepieces\u2019 are often unable to be dated but we developed a model to <strong>reconstruct when the disturbance occurred<\/strong>, confirming the impact at 990 million years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysis showed the impact event occurred <strong>around the same time as the emergence of some of the earliest known freshwater eukaryotes<\/strong>, the ancient ancestors of plants, animals and fungi. This revised date suggests that these lifeforms were living in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourweather.co.uk\/weather-Europe-United+Kingdom-East+and+South+West+Scotland-1-1-48-12913.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"cuerpo_intext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a> at a similar time to the meteorite impact.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"low\" class=\"lazy \" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1746192973_713_maxresdefault.jpg\"  width=\"768\" height=\"432\" alt=\"youtube video id=visgt2zmkSg\" id=\"visgt2zmkSg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Stac Fada impact occurred on a <strong>landscape sculpted by rivers, lakes and estuaries containing thriving microbial ecosystems<\/strong>,\u201d says Professor Tony Prave from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of St Andrews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpacts typically blow away the land surface and create deep craters. What makes Stac Fada unique is that it <strong>preserves not only the record of the impact event but also of the actual land surface<\/strong> across which those ancient ecosystems existed prior to the impact and, importantly, <strong>how they recovered from such a natural disaster<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where\u2019s the crater?<\/p>\n<p>The findings raise questions about meteorite impacts and <strong>how they may have influenced environmental conditions<\/strong> in ways that affected early ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Kirkland says that the <strong>impact crater has yet to be found<\/strong>, but the \u201cstudy has collected further clues that could finally reveal its location.
