Felipe VI, the king of Spain, used his speech at the conference of ambassadors \u2014 which, over two days, brought together the heads of Spanish diplomatic missions worldwide in Madrid \u2014 to warn about the risk of \u201cdismantling\u201d the transatlantic link<\/a> between Europe and the United States and the consequences this would have. After acknowledging that maintaining this link currently requires \u201cgreat patience and diplomatic courage,\u201d in an implicit reference to the unpredictable and arbitrary behavior of U.S. President Donald Trump, Felipe VI stressed that it is an \u201cindispensable framework [\u2026] that emerged from the ashes of the Second World War\u201d and has fostered the flourishing of democracies, stability, growth, and the development of multilateralism.<\/p>\n

However, he warned that preserving this bond \u201cis a shared responsibility,\u201d one that \u201cdemands mutual loyalty, reciprocal trust, a vision for the future, and respect for the \u2018rules of the game\u2019 which, always subject to improvement, are the norms of international law.\u201d Although he did not explicitly name Washington, his words constitute a veiled rebuke of the Trump administration\u2019s recent decisions, including the military intervention<\/a> in Venezuela. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe all lose out from the erosion of this bond,\u201d he insisted, alluding to the U.S.-European relationship. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to raise here what the hypothesis of its total dismantling would mean for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The king, who ascended the throne in 2014 after his father\u2019s abdication<\/a>, began his address by announcing the release of five Spanish citizens<\/a> detained in Venezuela and calling for \u201ca genuine, peaceful, inclusive, and sovereign transition, respectful of the free and independent will of the Venezuelan people, to begin as soon as possible, with guarantees.\u201d He emphasized that the Venezuelan people \u201cmust be the sole protagonists of their own destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n
