{"id":685212,"date":"2026-01-09T20:20:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T20:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/685212\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T20:20:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T20:20:13","slug":"wing-hong-chinese-elderly-group-facing-closure-after-council-scraps-peppercorn-rent-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/685212\/","title":{"rendered":"Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Group facing closure after council scraps &#8216;peppercorn&#8217; rent agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><b>Charities in Glasgow are facing significant rent hikes following the scrapping of their \u2018peppercorn\u2019 rent agreement by <\/b>the local council.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Group in Garnethill is one of the latest organisations that has to raise thousands of pounds or face closure, something the charity says will be devastating to the elderly Chinese community that uses the centre for their wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>The centre was among dozens of charities that benefited from the annual \u00a31 \u2018peppercorn\u2019 rent in recognition of its community value.<\/p>\n<p>However, last year, City Property \u2013 the organisation that manages Glasgow City Council\u2019s property portfolio \u2013 informed the charity that a new lease agreement would be introduced.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f04529750c5634683644c6b5f38907de-1767977806.jpeg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"   alt=\"Wing Hong\"\/>STV NewsWing Hong STV News<\/p>\n<p>Between years one and five, the charity will have to pay an annual rent that will increase by \u00a31,500 plus VAT, rising to \u00a315,000 by year eight and reaching market value by years nine and ten.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside warm meals and a strong sense of belonging, the Wing Hong Centre\u2019s popular yoga classes are vital for the health and balance of elderly members.<\/p>\n<p>Centre manager Amy Li-Man told STV News that the charity is a \u201clifeline\u201d for the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a small charity that has been supporting elderly Chinese in Glasgow for decades\u201d, she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe run lunch clubs, activities like exercise and social sessions, and we provide guidance and support in their own language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also work to promote and preserve Chinese culture and heritage while keeping community ties and the sense of unity strong, especially for elderly people who may feel isolated. For many people, this centre is the main place to meet people and get support and feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some, the lunch club is the only hot meal they\u2019ll have; it\u2019s a lifeline.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5abf58e6d88168b10c38d35a9d9bf9d2-1767977759.jpeg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"   alt=\"Wing Hong centre manager Amy Li-Man\"\/>STV NewsWing Hong centre manager Amy Li-Man STV News<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the centre closes, many elderly people will lose their main source of support and social contact. Isolation would increase, and people\u2019s physical and mental health would suffer. People would have nowhere to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wing Hong Centre is just one of a number of charities affected by the agreement being scrapped, which comes as the local council continues to raise funds to settle historic equal pay claims.<\/p>\n<p>The charity is now asking for donations to help keep it running.<\/p>\n<p>Anne Chau, who has been attending the centre for four years, explained: \u201cI joined right after the Covid lockdown. It means a lot because I feel it\u2019s a lifesaver. After Covid, we were inside, not doing anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy coming here, I see my friends, and I interact with other people, and we play ping pong, which is really good exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, this is vital for our well-being. We\u2019ve got nowhere to go, nowhere to play ping pong or gather. A lot of those elderly people are quite isolated. They would be sitting inside a house all day long alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will affect us profoundly if the centre closes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/40cdd06ac82598517ca8aafa874e1657-1767977739.jpeg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"   alt=\"Wing Hong member Anne Chau\"\/>STV NewsWing Hong member Anne Chau STV News<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe activities are really, really good because it means we are more agile and by playing ping pong, it helps me to have a sharp mind and good body balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how long you stay in a country, you still remember your motherland.
