The winner will need at least 16 votes from the 21 ministers, representing around 65 percent of the eurozone\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>Eurozone leaders formally propose the candidate to succeed the outgoing vice president, Luis de Guindos, whose eight-year term ends on May 31. The European Parliament and the ECB are entitled to an opinion about the final pick.<\/p>\n<p>Northern European applicants make up the bulk of the contenders, with Finland\u2019s central banker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suomenpankki.fi\/en\/bank-of-finland\/board-and-organisation\/board\/olli-rehn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olli Rehn<\/a>, facing competition from Baltic neighbors. These include his central banking peers, Estonia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eestipank.ee\/en\/madis-muller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madis M\u00fcller<\/a> and Latvia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bank.lv\/par-mums\/struktura\/shema\/martins-kazaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 Kaz\u0101ks<\/a>. Lithuania\u2019s former finance minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/finmin.lrv.lt\/lt\/naujienos\/lietuva-teikia-r-sadziaus-kandidatura-i-europos-centrinio-banko-pirmininko-pavaduotojo-posta-5CHy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rimantas \u0160ad\u017eius<\/a>, completes the Baltic round-up.
