{"id":685729,"date":"2026-01-10T01:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/685729\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T01:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:48:14","slug":"christmas-island-plastics-pollution-battle-for-turtles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/685729\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Island plastics pollution battle for turtles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Christmas Island&#8217;s Greta Beach should be one of Australia&#8217;s most prized stretches of sand and a haven for nesting green sea turtles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead, it is silently choking on a tsunami of plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shallow waves along a coastline with green forrest and sharp cliffs in the distance.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/182dded1b90b71730cf6846282eac90c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> The Christmas Island Marine Park was established in 2022.(ABC Pilbara: Mietta Adams)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For several months of the year, Greta Beach, 350 kilometres south of Indonesia, could be mistaken for a remote holiday paradise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But during the dry season, and especially from the beginning of June to the end of August, Indian Ocean currents bury the beach under tonnes of plastic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Much of it is rubbish carelessly discarded by consumers who live thousands of kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Greta Beach is a vital nesting ground for green sea turtles, which have only recently been taken off the global endangered list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is one of the few locations where they can lay eggs year-round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Increasingly, however, the waste smothering this beach makes nesting difficult, according to Lin Gaff, who has been volunteering with Island Care for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The female turtles struggle over an obstacle course of sharp plastic, nylon ropes, discarded shoes, bottles, and styrofoam remnants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is a desperate effort to find sand deep enough to incubate their eggs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Most of the time, they hit plastic debris.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A turtle with sand on it lies about 30 centimetres below the surface with sticks and some pieces of rubbish around it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/03b113ab8ef4743b7f44fb265f3ee4d4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> A green sea turtle lays eggs on Greta Beach.(Supplied: Robyn Stephenson)<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large turtle on the sand among debris like plastics and sticks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/b8ff46133257e9907023dc079846faf5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Nesting is year-round on Christmas Island.(Supplied: Robyn Stephenson\u00a0)Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a constant battle for them. It&#8217;s just insidious,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2025, environmental group the Tangaroa Blue Foundation gathered 2.8 tonnes of rubbish from Greta Beach during clean-ups \u2014 more than double the amount collected in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The foundation, which focuses on removing marine litter and finding solutions to Marine Pollution Bulletin found that most of the debris on the beach originated in Indonesia and Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Only 1.8 per cent originated on Christmas Island itself or came from the Australian mainland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Yet the small community of 1,700 people who live on the remote territory bears the burden of the endless waste washing up on their doorstep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s something that we are all a part of, even though that rubbish doesn&#8217;t come from class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While islanders have become accustomed to the plastic-choked beach, Kyoto University Associate Professor Dr Saskia Abrahms-Kavunenko says many people are shocked to learn the problem exists on Australian soil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was showing one of my brother&#8217;s friends some video footage of Christmas Island,&#8221; she explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He said, &#8216;There would be a massive outcry if this material was in Western Australia.&#8217;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Gaff agrees that many Australians are unaware of the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are not a lot of places in Australia where that would be acceptable,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In fact, just two kilometres south, the island&#8217;s famous Dolly Beach has been listed as <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-12-03\/two-remote-island-beaches-off-wa-coast-ranked-in-top-10\/8088270\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of<\/a> Australia&#8217;s most beautiful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Data collected between 2023 and 2025 found debris deposition was 50 times higher on Greta Beach than Dolly Beach, potentially due to the shape of its surrounding cliffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The plastics on Greta Beach have been a focus of Dr Abrahms-Kavunenko&#8217;s anthropological research since 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The things that you can see are just the tip of the iceberg into what&#8217;s actually in the ocean,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A bigger, less visible problem is the impact of microplastics, which absorb and spread chemicals throughout marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<img between boulders.(ABC Pilbara: Mietta Adams)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Abrahms-Kavunenko says communities in Indonesia are not able to manage the materials that enter the country due to the overproduction of plastics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So it makes people a lot of money to bring plastics in, but they&#8217;re not really willing to bring those plastics out,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a really big problem we are facing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is also plaguing Christmas Island&#8217;s closest neighbours, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, with plastics in the Indian Ocean travelling as far west as the Seychelles, 5,500 kilometres essential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the future of a worldwide treaty is uncertain after talks between 185 nations fell apart in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, federal Environment Minister Murray Watt said he was disappointed by the result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He acknowledged that plastic pollution was particularly detrimental to islands, and said the Australian government would invest more in new recycling infrastructure on small islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Christmas Island has no recycling facilities, after its only local recycling workshop stopped operating in 2023 due to external difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Push against plastics<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Statistics recorded by the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) \u2014 a national network of volunteers, communities, and organisations coordinated by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation \u2014 make for grim reading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2025, the AMDI database recorded that 55,723 pieces of hard plastics, 4,404 plastic lids and bottle caps, and 4,142 pieces of foam insulation and packaging had been collected during clean-ups of Greta Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman wearing class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For example, Tangaroa Blue said foam insulation fragments increased by 11.5 times between 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Most recently, the island&#8217;s beaches have been awash with hundreds of rubber thongs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The variety of debris inspires artist Cecile Williams, who returned huge story,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s sort of finer plastics now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s probably the most plastics I&#8217;ve ever seen \u2026 the habitat&#8217;s getting destroyed.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As artist-in-residence, Ms Williams worked with the community, from school students to those in respite care, to create artworks based on their encounters with nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Fifteen-year-old student Inayah Sultan Syed centred her artwork around phosphate bags \u2014 which are used to collect rubbish during the clean-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was like a full truck filled with rubbish,&#8221; Inayah says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And the sad thing is the next day the rubbish would just come back up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Williams&#8217; community exhibition explored the dichotomy between the island&#8217;s environment when they are irresponsibly discarded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Under the tropical sun and in the thundering surf, the boxes break into smaller pieces and release millions of microplastics into the environment, harming marine life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">To tackle the problem, Tangaroa Blue has created Christmas Island&#8217;s esky library, in which eskies are re-purposed by businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Recyclable packaging alternatives are also being trialled, with up to 30 different uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile, a local urban farm initiative, Green Space Tech, has been converting the boxes into simple hydroponic systems to grow fresh produce.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we&#8217;ve done is turn that into an opportunity to grow some produce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The kits are also sold to community members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Eco Crab Industries founder Tanya Cross hopes to revive her plastic-recycling workshop on the island in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The process involved shredding, moulding and compressing plastics into items like bowls and coasters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said Greta Beach presents a complex problem that needs multiple solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That is the biggest hope \u2014 that the tap can be stopped,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;If you can stop the plastic coming in, that would be one of the biggest achievements of the world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p
