{"id":686191,"date":"2026-01-10T06:46:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T06:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/686191\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T06:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T06:46:13","slug":"edinburgh-region-to-receive-nearly-38m-from-uk-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/686191\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh region to receive\u00a0nearly \u00a338m\u00a0from UK Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/tag\/edinburgh-counci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Council<\/a> and its regional partners are set to receive\u00a0nearly \u00a338m in funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/140m-scottish-local-growth-fund-to-drive-economic-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK Government\u2019s Local Growth Fund (LGF)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The news, which will see \u00a3140m in total injected into Scotland\u2019s local authorities was announced yesterday by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Alexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglas Alexander<\/a> and\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scotland_Office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland Office<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The programme aims to fund regional infrastructure investment, business support, and skills development projects to \u201cdrive economic growth\u201d and make \u201ca real difference\u201d to people\u2019s prosperity in Scotland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly \u00a338m of this fund will be distributed to Edinburgh Council and its partners in the Edinburgh &amp; South-East Scotland (ESES) City Region \u2013 East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/tag\/fife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fife<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/tag\/scottish-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Borders<\/a>\u00a0councils.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SCOTLAND_COUNCILS_INVESTMENT_DN01.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"978560\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #978560;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"The sign for the Scotland Office at Dover House\" class=\"wp-image-1253462 not-transparent\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SCOTLAND_COUNCILS_INVESTMENT_DN01.jpg\"\/><\/a>The \u00a337.8 million for ESES region will be split between Edinburgh, West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian, Borders, and Fife councils (C) Howard Lake \/ Flickr<\/p>\n<p>Four other regions were selected for funding: Ayrshire,\u00a0Forth\u00a0Valley, Glasgow City, and Tay Cities, totalling 23 local authority areas in total.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fife Council looks set to receive funding from both the ESES and Tay regions, finding itself on both lists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine\u00a0local authorities in the north and south of Scotland, including Orkney, Shetland, Aberdeen city and shire, and Dumfries &amp; Galloway have been excluded from funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The LGF programme aims to provide targeted investment to boost economic growth in key areas and \u201cimprove living standards\u201d by investing in regions that\u00a0contain\u00a0the areas with the lowest disposable income per household.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Funding has been\u00a0allocated\u00a0at the regional level, via Regional Economic Partnerships (REPs), to enable cooperation between councils and strategic, bigger-picture decision-making.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Council Leader Jane Meagher said: \u201cI welcome any allocation of funding to Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region. Edinburgh has an unparalleled track record in delivering the growth that is essential to achieve our wider priorities of eradicating poverty and responding to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdinburgh and South East Scotland has an award-winning Integrated Regional Employability and Skills programme and it is essential that we use the Local Growth Funding to support jobs, businesses and to boost prosperity and skills both locally and regionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>REPs do not just consist of council leaders, however.
