AMERICAN Airlines<\/a> has\u00a0announced that Scotland\u2019s only direct route to Philadelphia<\/a> \u2013 from Edinburgh<\/a> \u2013 has been extended through the winter months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The \u201chighly-successful\u201d service was restarted last summer after a prolonged absence, and the daily route has now been extended and will run\u00a0nearly year-round.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The services, restored last year between May and October, have been extended from March 2026 into January 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The service is not currently\u00a0operating\u00a0and had not been expected to begin operation until\u00a0spring or\u00a0summer, but the airline announced that the start of this year\u2019s flights will be brought forward to March.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Simultaneously, American Airlines announced a resumption of daily flights to New York JFK from Scotland\u2019s capital,\u00a0operating\u00a0for the\u00a0spring and full summer season between 8 March and 24 October.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The New York service will begin utilising the 155-seat Airbus A321\u00a0aircraft, one of the newest in the American Airlines fleet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new routes have taken on\u00a0additional\u00a0significance with Scotland\u2019s qualification for the World Cup in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Demand has increased anyway, and the throngs of\u00a0Tartan\u00a0Army faithful making their way across the pond will only add to the pressure on services.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gordon Dewar,\u00a0chief\u00a0executive of Edinburgh Airport, spoke of his excitement at the extension of the route.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement, he said: \u201cAnnouncing an extension to an already popular route is a fantastic way to start the new year, and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0delighted to see American Airlines continue to grow its presence at Scotland\u2019s busiest airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTransatlantic travel, both inbound and outbound, continues to be in high demand and we know there\u2019s an even greater interest in it this summer as the Tartan Army and others look to follow their teams at the 2026 World Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re glad to continue to offer that breadth of choice by working with our partners to ensure we have fantastic connections for both business and leisure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia flights will begin on 29 March, and the New York flights will begin on 8 March.<\/p>\n
