Police have made a number of arrests in Manchester city centre after demonstrations in St Peter’s Square.<\/p>\n

Videos being shared on social media, meanwhile, showed lines of police officers, amid shouting and chants, holding back gathered protesters.<\/p>\n

Greater Manchester Police<\/a> said around 400 people were involved in what the force called ‘three different demonstrations in St Peter’s Square’.<\/p>\n

GMP said the protests were ‘largely peaceful’, but confirmed a number of arrests.<\/p>\n

A man was arrested on suspicion of a racially-aggravated assault, with a second man held on suspicion of affray. No details surrounding the suspected offences have been revealed by the force.<\/p>\n

No ages for the men have been confirmed, but both are said to remain in custody for questioning on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

GMP said officers worked ‘throughout the day’ and thanked members of the public for their patience.<\/p>\n

In a statement on social media, GMP’s city centre division confirmed details of the arrests.<\/p>\n

They posted: “Today’s protests in Manchester City Centre<\/a> have now concluded, with around 400 people gathering across three different demonstrations in St Peter’s Square.<\/p>\n

“Our officers have worked throughout the day to liaise with organisers and partners to facilitate peaceful protests and minimise disruption to the public.<\/p>\n

“The protests have been largely peaceful. One man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and another has been arrested for affray. They remain in custody for questioning.<\/p>\n

“We thank members of the public and protestors for their co-operation, patience and support today.
