{"id":68771,"date":"2025-05-02T15:53:07","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T15:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/68771\/"},"modified":"2025-05-02T15:53:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T15:53:07","slug":"red-alert-chile-issues-tsunami-warning-after-coastal-7-4-earthquake-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/68771\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Red alert\u2019: Chile issues tsunami warning after coastal 7.4 earthquake | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"post-label__text\">DEVELOPING STORY<\/strong>DEVELOPING STORY, <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__subhead\">The quake also struck off the Argentinian coast; Chile\u2019s warning is for areas in southernmost Magallanes region.<\/p>\n<p>Chilean authorities have issued a tsunami warning and ordered evacuations after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The Chilean National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senapred.cl\/informate\/alerta\/se-declara-alerta-roja-para-la-region-de-magallanes-y-la-antartica-chilena-por-tsunami\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> a \u201cred alert\u201d on Friday for coastal areas in its southernmost Magallanes region and the country\u2019s Antarctic territory due to the tsunami risk.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on its website, the agency said hundreds of people had been evacuated from a handful of communities, including the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/5\/25\/puerto-williams-a-journey-to-the-end-of-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puerto Williams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Disaster Prevention and Response System continues to assess the impact on people and damage to infrastructure and basic services,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>No damage or casualties have been initially reported.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake struck Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of just 10km (six miles), the United States Geological Survey said.<\/p>\n<p>Magallanes is Chile\u2019s largest and southernmost region and one of its least populated.
