{"id":688385,"date":"2026-01-11T06:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T06:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/688385\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T06:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T06:54:13","slug":"screen-time-linked-to-poor-speech-development-in-under-fives-say-ministers-as-parents-offered-new-guidance-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/688385\/","title":{"rendered":"Screen time linked to poor speech development in under-fives, say ministers as parents offered new guidance | UK News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parents will be offered government guidance on screen time for under-fives as research links prolonged viewing to poor speech development.<\/p>\n<p>Education Secretary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/bridget-phillipson-11219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridget Phillipson<\/a><\/strong> is to announce on Monday that the advice will be developed with input from parents, children and early years practitioners.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/toddlers-glued-to-screens-say-fewer-words-ministers-warn-lm9k2nmln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Writing in the Sunday Times<\/a><\/strong>, Ms Phillipson said: &#8220;Research shows that by age two, almost all children &#8211; around 98% &#8211; are watching screens such as mobiles, tablets, and TV every day, during a critical period for language development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Government research, released to coincide with the announcement, suggests that the use of screens, including mobile devices and televisions, is linked to poorer language development in the under-twos.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 4,758 parents showed that children with the highest screen time &#8211; around five hours a day &#8211; could say significantly fewer words than those at the other end of the scale, who watched for around 44 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/skynews-screen-time-child-stock_7049061.jpg\"   alt=\"Pic: iStock\" data-testid=\"article-image-image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Image:<br \/>\n        Pic: iStock<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parents, teachers and nursery workers talk about children arriving at nursery and school and finding it harder to hold conversations, focus, or engage in learning,&#8221; Ms Phillipson added.<\/p>\n<p>It is reported that the guidance is likely to suggest using screens as part of an activity like storytime or with educational games.<\/p>\n<p>        More on Bridget Phillipson<\/p>\n<p>The guidance is also expected to be accompanied by lessons for parents on early years development, including speech and language.<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/skynews-screentime-family-stock_7049063.jpg\"   alt=\"Pic: iStock\" data-testid=\"article-image-image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Image:<br \/>\n        Pic: iStock<\/p>\n<p>The topic of whether screentime &#8211; the amount of time spent daily using screen-based technology &#8211; is actually harmful for children is controversial.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/princess-of-wales-10691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess of Wales<\/a><\/strong> warned that smartphones and computer screens were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/kates-comments-on-screentime-hit-a-royal-nerve-across-the-uk-so-what-does-science-say-13448890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creating &#8220;an epidemic of disconnection&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> within families.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/peter-kyle-11222\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Kyle<\/a><\/strong>, the then technology secretary, told Sky News in July he was considering a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/two-hour-screen-time-limit-and-curfews-for-children-being-considered-by-government-13400156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-hour daily limit per social media platform for children<\/a> <\/strong>to tackle &#8220;compulsive&#8221; screen time, although the policy was never implemented.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, a law came into force in December to ban under-16s from having social media accounts.
