What happens next depends on where they live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a stark contrast in how women needing one key treatment are dealt with depending solely on whether they live in England or Wales<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Two women in Cardiff want abortions. One has a GP in England while the other\u2019s is in Wales \u2013 and this difference determines whether they wait one day or three weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Beda (not her real name), a 26-year-old <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Cardiff<\/a> woman, got unexpectedly pregnant in January 2024. With her GP in Cthe Welsh capital she went through Cardiff and Vale University health board. Four weeks later she had her abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In this time Beda\u2019s pregnancy developed past the 10-week limit on a medical abortion. Her body was changing, her mental health was suffering, and she had to get a surgical procedure instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI found out I was pregnant at eight weeks. It was four weeks later that I had the procedure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to have an at-home experience but by the time I got to the appointment I was too far along.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThings change week to week. Your body can do the craziest things. I got hungrier, I felt out of control, I gained a lot of weight at a fast pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t feel energetic or happy about life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI feel quite angry about it. I have come to expect it with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">NHS<\/a> care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Long wait times like this are causing women to travel to England as Welsh health boards struggle to provide care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">About 11,500 women have abortions each year in Wales. You can just ring us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cYou can self-refer to us,\u201d said Vivienne Rose, clinic manager of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A disparity in waiting times between those with English GPs and those with Welsh GPs is apparent. And it is all to do with who pays for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In England the majority of abortions are performed by the third sector with the biggest provider being BPAS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In Wales most abortions are provided by NHS hospitals where provisions are stretched and waiting times are long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This means that if you have an English GP NHS England will pay for BPAS to perform your abortions at your nearest clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For many women this is in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWomen are saying to me: \u2018It\u2019s growing inside me. It\u2019s making me feel much worse knowing that I\u2019m leaving it later\u2019,\u201d said Vivienne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Waiting time for an abortion is important. In Wales after 12 weeks and six days most NHS hospitals will not provide an abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While the BPAS clinic in Cardiff usually offers abortion up to 18 weeks it has had to temporarily suspend its surgical procedures until March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This means that if you get to 13 weeks in Cardiff you will have to go to London, Birmingham, or Liverpool. Beda was just days away from this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As a result of this wait some women in Wales are travelling to England for abortions. This was the case for 30-year-old Rachel (not her real name) from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/carmarthenshire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Carmarthenshire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Rachel was backpacking in Denmark when she found out she was pregnant. She went to the Red Cross who told her they could help her \u2013 but in five days\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">With this news she decided to go home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWhen I came back to Wales I was told I could not have an abortion for two and a half weeks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo I used my friend\u2019s address to access an abortion in England. There were just so many hoops you had to jump through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt is crazy that the Red Cross in another country would have been more efficient,\u201d said Rachel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Using her friend\u2019s address in Bristol Rachel was able to access a medical abortion within two working days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But because of being away from home she went through her abortion on her own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI got the abortion alone. I took the first pill on the train home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAll of it was a bit depressing \u2013 being at the clinic on my own and the train on my own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIf I had got it in Wales my mum or my sister could have come with me,\u201d said Rachel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Having to travel to England puts additional barriers up for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It means, like Rachel, often they have to travel alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSome people haven\u2019t got an escort to go to England with them. They\u2019re like: \u2018I can\u2019t tell my mother \u2013 and my husband has to look after the children\u2019, so it\u2019s horrible,\u201d said Vivienne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For some women the wait is too much and they opt to pay for their own abortions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board area 10% of abortions are privately funded. This is the highest rate of self-funded abortions across all of England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSome people are paying thousands because they don\u2019t want to wait \u2013 they want it out of the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re worried that if they wait for the NHS they\u2019re not going to get the tablets so they pay,\u201d Vivienne said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the BPAS clinic prices for abortions range from \u00a3622 to \u00a33,044.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Attempts have been made to improve access to NHS abortions in Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/welsh-government\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Welsh Government<\/a> launched its Women\u2019s Health Plan in December 2024. It states: \u201cAbortion care should be available locally and without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, with BPAS temporarily suspending its surgical procedures, abortion care in Wales has only got worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWith the Women\u2019s Health Plan there is more awareness but there is such a lack of funding. It can feel a little bit like their full heart\u2019s not in it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWith the [Senedd] election [in May] we are uncertain of what will happen with abortion care,\u201d said Lucy Ward, chair of the cross-party women\u2019s health group in the Senedd and policy and engagement manager at BPAS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Also, in Wales, a number of healthcare professionals object to performing abortions, causing delays to care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Conscientious objection is the right for healthcare professionals to opt out of doing an abortion procedure due to personal beliefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a survey by Mia Squires and Dr Adam Tyler at Hywel Dda University Health Board 59% of Welsh healthcare professionals said they had encountered cases where conscientious objection led to delayed or denied patient care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBecause I have so many (conscientious) objections in my health board I cannot get a surgical theatre list \u2026 so when I do surgical abortions, I have to sit women in the waiting areas, in corridors, because I can\u2019t get a bed,\u201d one consultant said<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">during the women\u2019s health group meeting in the Senedd on December 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Another added: \u201cSome services rely on a small number of non-objecting clinicians and this creates unsustainable pressures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While charities like BPAS are the biggest providers of abortions in England in Wales, it falls to over-stretched health boards under \u201cunsustainable pressures\u201d.
