{"id":689035,"date":"2026-01-11T14:06:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T14:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/689035\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T14:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T14:06:12","slug":"antarctic-researcher-from-norfolk-counts-penguins-at-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/689035\/","title":{"rendered":"Antarctic researcher from Norfolk counts penguins at Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gentoos are the third-largest member of the penguin family, after emperor and king penguins, and an important part of the ecosystem in Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They can live for 15 to 20 years in the wild, mate with the same partner each year and are the world&#8217;s fastest underwater birds, reaching speeds up to 22mph (35km\/h).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With some 774,000 gentoos in the wild, the species is regarded as stable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;re only really focused on the immediate number on the island,&#8221; explained Watson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I&#8217;m particularly interested in the number of nests, the number of eggs, then eventually the number of chicks and the number of chicks that make it through to maturity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Obviously, climate change is a concern.
