London City Lionesses share spoils with Liverpool.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

London City Lionesses drew against Liverpool in their first Barclays Women\u2019s Super League fixture, and Head Coach Eder Maestre\u2019s\u00a0first\u00a0game\u00a0in\u00a0charge,\u00a0at BrewDog Stadium, St Helens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chances were\u00a0few\u00a0and far\u00a0between as both sides cancelled each other out with solid defensive displays.\u00a0The home side started brightly with new signing\u00a0Alice Bergstr\u00f6m\u00a0threatening. The Swede was on the end of a half chance for Liverpool as she was played in by Cornelia Kapocs, her effort drifting out at the far post.<\/p>\n

Both teams were organised in their defence throughout the opening period.<\/p>\n

With 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Ceri Holland latched onto some hesitation in the visitors\u2019 backline but the ball edged wide for a goal-kick.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bergstr\u00f6m\u00a0was again in the thick of the action at the start of the second half, found on the right of the\u00a0box, her\u00a0dinked cross almost sneaking in at the back post.<\/p>\n

The visitors grew into the contest, Luc\u00eda Corrales threatening down the left-flank reaching byline and winning corner. Wassa Sangar\u00e9 met the resultant delivery but her header was wayward.<\/p>\n

On 78 minutes, the home side carved a glorious opportunity, Holland was found in space on the left but her strike from a tight angle edged over.<\/p>\n

In the closing stages. London City pushed forward in search of a late winner. Jana Fern\u00e1ndez\u00a0showed\u00a0strong skill and determination to keep in a Sangar\u00e9 pass, the right-back\u2019s cross then found\u00a0substitute\u00a0Izzy Goodwin who couldn\u2019t divert goalwards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s results mean London City sit\u00a0seventh\u00a0in the\u00a0Barclays Women\u2019s Super League.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking after the game, head coach Maestre said:\u00a0\u201cWe wanted to win. We came here to win so it is disappointing. When you cannot win, at least don\u2019t lose and we were strong\u00a0defensively\u00a0which is positive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLiverpool are a strong team, who can cause problems and they showed that today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur second half\u00a0performance\u00a0was better but I know we can\u00a0improve a lot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to have a more punishing mindset in attacking terms. We need to recognise the spaces created and take advantage of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe WSL is a very\u00a0strong competition.\u00a0We have work to do on the training field in order to improve,\u00a0particularly\u00a0in those areas and we will do that.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

London City return to action next Saturday (17th January) where they travel to Sunderland in the fourth round\u00a0of the Adobe Women\u2019s FA Cup.<\/p>\n

They then host Manchester City in the Barclays Women\u2019s Super League at the CopperJax Community\u00a0Stadium\u00a0on Sunday 25 January.<\/p>\n
