{"id":69014,"date":"2025-05-02T17:56:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T17:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/69014\/"},"modified":"2025-05-02T17:56:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T17:56:09","slug":"germany-formally-classifies-far-right-afd-party-as-extremist-in-blow-to-nazi-linked-populist-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/69014\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany formally classifies far-right AfD party as extremist, in blow to Nazi-linked populist movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weeks after it was shut out of Germany\u2019s new government, the far-right party Alternative for Germany has been designated as an extremist group by the country\u2019s domestic intelligence agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The move is another blow to the party, known as AfD, following its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2025\/02\/24\/global\/far-right-afd-notches-record-second-place-finish-in-german-election-as-center-right-party-prevails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unprecedented second-place finish<\/a> in national elections earlier this year. The party has a history of minimizing the Holocaust and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2024\/07\/02\/global\/far-right-german-politician-fined-again-for-using-a-banned-nazi-phrase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using extremist rhetoric<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2025\/02\/20\/global\/german-jews-express-alarm-after-j-d-vances-comments-boost-far-right-afd-ahead-of-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has worried many Jews<\/a>. AfD has received vocal support from senior Trump administration figures including Vice President J.D. Vance and Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>The designation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, known as BfV, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/german-spy-agency-ranks-far-right-afd-extremist-2025-05-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made in an 1,100-page report published on Friday<\/a>. The report found that AfD, which traffics in Euroskeptic and anti-immigrant rhetoric, is a racist and anti-Muslim organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The head of an umbrella organization for German Jews <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZentralratJuden\/status\/1918251805319844003\">voiced support for the decision<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have long warned against the AfD as the parliamentary arm of the growing extreme right in Germany,\u201d Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, wrote on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schuster added that AfD \u201cprovides a political home for antisemites, nationalists, and enemies of democracy. AfD representatives \u2014 be it through important positions on committees or similar \u2014 must never be allowed to assume governmental functions or even gain access to security-relevant information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings give the spy agency more leeway to monitor the party\u2019s activities, including with the use of informants, and could lay the groundwork for a ban from government. AfD is expected to challenge the decision in court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The party had previously challenged an earlier BfV designation labeling it an entity suspected of extremism, but lost that case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AfD leaders called the new extremist designation a \u201cblow against democracy.\u201d Other right-wing European politicians, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/matteosalvinimi\/status\/1918298013664977216\">including Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini<\/a>, rallied to the AfD\u2019s defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany is not the only country in Europe where far-right politicians are facing official restrictions. Austria\u2019s far-right party <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/austria-new-government-coalition-stocker-2d39904a00c33d382b1c94cb021d0c0c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was also excluded from that country\u2019s governing coalition<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>And Romania\u2019s presidential elections will be held again this weekend after the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/30\/romania-presidential-elections-why-is-there-another-vote-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annulled the results of the initial vote<\/a>, citing irregularities and evidence of a Russian influence operation.
