{"id":690907,"date":"2026-01-12T11:00:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T11:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/690907\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T11:00:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T11:00:20","slug":"how-to-make-the-most-of-your-workouts-after-menopause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/690907\/","title":{"rendered":"How to make the most of your workouts after menopause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Sarah Baldassaro turned 50, she took stock of her health and began working with a fitness coach on <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/weightlighting-train-to-failure-exercise-9f8781dac9ecdc9e75471ac546881d39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training<\/a>, a type of exercise that\u2019s crucial for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/menopause-hormone-therapy-hot-flashes-0f3258f1762e1fb3c9a6f7205a43e66e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women in midlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I would say I\u2019m stronger overall than I ever have been at any age,\u201d said Baldassaro, 52, of Alexandria, Virginia. \u201cMy fitness level is much more like when I was in my early 30s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medical experts say <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/strength-training-excercise-4eb437efde74b4dc5e937c53f26ff528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training keeps bones and muscles healthy<\/a> after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hormone-therapy-estrogen-hot-flashes-fda-5b1f29a73553c142f67b1f88b6656428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">menopause<\/a> when estrogen loss speeds up a reduction in bone density and contributes to the gradual loss of muscle mass. This type of exercise \u2014 which involves working against resistance \u2014 also helps women maintain a healthy weight and stay on track with New Year\u2019s resolutions about fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Medical experts say strength training keeps bones and muscles healthy after menopause when estrogen loss speeds up a reduction in bone density and contributes to the gradual loss of muscle mass. Here\u2019s how to get started at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople underestimate how powerful it is,\u201d said Dr. Christina DeAngelis, an OB-GYN at Penn State Health.<\/p>\n<p>But what should your workout look like and how do you get started?<\/p>\n<p>Strength training with weights<\/p>\n<p>Physical therapist Hilary Granat said bone and muscle health are intertwined: When muscle pulls on bone during resistance training, it stimulates bone-building cells.<\/p>\n<p>Resistance can come from dumbbells, free weights or machines such as rowers. One example of a strength training exercise is the chest press, which involves lying back on a bench or the ground, pressing weights up from chest level and then lowering them.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to work \u201cclose to muscle failure,\u201d said Granat, who owns Core Total Wellness in Washington, D.C. \u201cYou really have to push yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This article is part of AP\u2019s Be Well coverage, focusing on wellness, fitness, diet and mental health. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/be-well\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Read more Be Well.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That means lifting weights that are heavy enough to be challenging and doing somewhere between six and 30 repetitions.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll know you\u2019re working hard enough if you start slowing down in tempo or speed or can\u2019t do another repetition in good form, she said. A good rule of thumb for an exercise like a bicep curl is to lift weights somewhere between 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) and 20 pounds (9.1 kilograms), with novices starting at the lower end.<\/p>\n<p>Baldassaro has worked her way up to 20 pounds (9.1 kilograms) for some exercises, incorporating techniques she learned from Granat.<\/p>\n<p>She said the health coach has helped her expand her workouts beyond mostly cardio.<\/p>\n<p>While she still does aerobic exercises, \u201cthe strength training has really been the difference maker for me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>No weights? No problem<\/p>\n<p>Building up bones and muscles doesn\u2019t necessarily require equipment. You can also do pushups, squats, lunges, situps, crunches or planks. Another good exercise is squatting down with your back against a wall.<\/p>\n<p>Even the simple act of getting into and out of a chair can be helpful, DeAngelis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to engage your core going from sitting to standing,\u201d she said. \u201cThat also allows you to work on your coordination and balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also what Granat calls \u201cimpact training\u201d \u2014 exercises like walking, hiking, running, jumping, skipping and climbing stairs. On the high-impact end of the spectrum is a \u201crebound jump,\u201d which involves jumping up and down from a step 10 to 30 times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not talking about jumping hard and fast and a lot,\u201d she said, adding that three times a week is enough.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget about balance<\/p>\n<p>Experts say middle-aged women should also perform balance exercises, which play a crucial role in preventing falls that can break or fracture bones.<\/p>\n<p>These include tai chi, yoga or even standing on one leg while brushing your teeth for around 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>All of these exercises are great for younger people too, experts say, especially since bone mass peaks at 25 to 30 years old and slowly begins to lessen around age 40.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing how strength training has improved her life, Baldassaro advises others: \u201cDon\u2019t wait.
