By Porter Anderson, Editor-in-Chief | @Porter_Anderson<\/a><\/p>\n \u2018Ne Zha 2\u2032 Blasts to No. 1\u2019 \u2018Ne Zha 2: The Past of the Three Realms\u2019, production poster<\/p>\n The latest example of this provided by our associates at\u00a0Jiang Yanping<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0Beijing OpenBook<\/a> might have been turbo-charged by the fact that Ne Zha: The Past of the Three Realms arrived during Spring Festival.<\/p>\n Directed and written by Jiaozi (Yu Yang) with Jing Wang and Wenzhang Liu producing, Ne Zha 2, as it\u2019s called, is a an opulent animated feature, a sequel to the original film Ne Zha\u00a0from 2019. (You will see some instances of the hero\u2019s name transliterated as one word at times, in English: Nezha.)<\/p>\n At nearly three hours running time, the new sequel includes, as Carlos Aguilar writes at Variety<\/a>, \u201cspells, curses, vendettas, a twist villain, giant dragons who turn into humanoid warriors and many other creatures populating the world of this gargantuan feat of eye-popping computer animation.\u201d<\/p>\n Eventually, a major bump in the book\u2019s market performance might be connected to the deep level of lore-spinning that Aguilar writes may require multiple readings or viewings to understand. \u201cKeeping up with the intricate overload of lore at hand,\u201d he writes, \u201cis a task that may require multiple viewings and nonstop notetaking.\u201d<\/p>\n The question of cultural transfer from and to the Chinese market is a vexing one. Nancy Tartaglione\u2019s commentary at Deadline<\/a> is especially good on this film\u2019s massive success and uncertainties surrounding the international trade.<\/p>\n She writes, \u201cWhether\u00a0NZ2 generates newfound interest in Chinese movies outside of the home market remains to be seen.
