{"id":691418,"date":"2026-01-12T16:31:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:31:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/691418\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T16:31:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:31:18","slug":"dog-obis-life-saved-by-longbridge-vet-after-stick-pierces-stomach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/691418\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog Obi&#8217;s life saved by Longbridge vet after stick pierces stomach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\tA DOG\u2019S life was saved thanks to emergency vets after a stick pierced his stomach.<br \/>\nThe vet team at the Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital in Longbridge, Birmingham, admitted him when the wood was found protruding him after he had been playing in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Owners Robert Clarke and Katie Luckman, from Kidderminster, called Obi in from the garden to go on a shopping trip when they spotted the stick.<\/p>\n<p>Obi was transferred to the specialist team at IVC Evidensia\u2019s Blaise Referrals after an initial assessment at a local first opinion vet in Kidderminster.<\/p>\n<p>The state-of-the-art specialist-led multi-disciplinary referral hospital offers 24-hour emergency and critical care.<\/p>\n<p>An urgent operation was scheduled there but then vet Lara Dempsey discovered the wood was making its way out, not in, This meant five-year-old springer spaniel had actually swallowed the stick, possibly months earlier.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-125993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Obi-operation-380x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"458\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the life-threatening risk of peritonitis with the skewer having pierced the stomach, the dog had shown few symptoms and has since made a remarkable recovery after the procedure.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Katie said: \u201cAs I slipped his lead over his neck, we suddenly saw this sticking out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was protruding really clearly, and we thought he\u2019d maybe fallen onto something, and it had stuck in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we keep the garden tidy and couldn\u2019t think how it had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough there wasn\u2019t any bleeding, we knew we needed help right away and took him straight to out vets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vet Lara, a specialist in small animal surgery soft tissue, said: \u201cThis was a really unusual case as Obi was mainly asymptomatic \u2013 apart from him not gaining weight despite a normal appetite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the stick had perforated through the stomach and spleen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite that, Obi was still bright and trying to bounce around when he came in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suggested blood tests and CT imaging, but they were keen to just proceed with the surgery straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-125990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Obi-Blaise-Veterinary-Referrals-3-380x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"538\"  \/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But, after noticing how the stick got there, she added: \u201cThere wasn\u2019t much abdominal fluid, and I could see the stick had perforated through the stomach, skewered the spleen and then exited the left abdominal wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe opened up the stomach to remove it and, as the spleen had been severely damaged, I had to do a splenectomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI debrided and closed the abdominal wall on the inside, but left it open on the outside to allow it to heal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the 90-minute procedure, Obi was kept in overnight for observation but was showing huge signs of recovery by the time his owners picked him up the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Robert added: \u201cHe was running round crazy and was immediately back to his old self when we got him home, playing with our cat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started to put on weight again very quickly, but we\u2019d never have thought the fact he hadn\u2019t gained weight before was because he had this in him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just so grateful to the team at Blaise for all they were able to do for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lara said the stick perforating the stomach led to peritonitis which could be life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObi\u2019s body had managed to wall off the stick, which is why he didn\u2019t show any obvious signs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving had such damage to his organs and the stick in him for so long, Obi was very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#13; A DOG\u2019S life was saved thanks to emergency vets after a stick pierced his stomach.
