The long-awaited film was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/general\/josh-oconnor-paul-mescal-lead-gay-historical-romance-1234675630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> in 2021, with director Oliver Hermanus <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/global\/josh-oconnor-paul-mescal-gay-romance-history-of-sound-1235100566\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deeming<\/a> both stars \u201ctwo of the most promising actors of their generation\u201d at the time. <\/p>\n<p>Four years later, and that statement rings even more true today.<\/p>\n<p>Mescal stars in the film as Lionel, who falls for his fellow music student David (O\u2019Connor). The duo then set out to record the lives, voices, and music of World War I soldiers. The film is an adaptation of Ben Shattuck\u2019s award-winning short story. And yes, Mescal sings in the role. \u201cThe History of Sound\u201d will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/a-desert-director-joshua-erkman-interview-1235120077\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235120077\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/A-DESERT_Main_Renny-Theatre.jpg\" alt=\"'A Desert'\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235014203\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/chloe-sevigny-interview-american-psycho-remake-1235119936\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235119936\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2196463030.jpg\" alt=\"Chlo&#xEB; Sevigny\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235119949\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Director Hermanus (\u201cLiving\u201d) recently told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/history-of-sound-paul-mescal-josh-oconnor-first-look-awards-insider\" target=\"_blank\">Vanity Fair<\/a> that it is to the film\u2019s benefit that production took so long to start amid the pandemic, financing issues, and the strikes. \u201cTheir lives [Mescal and O\u2019Connor] were literally changing, and it was always this groupthink situation of, \u2018Where can we find the time to force the universe to let us make this film?,\u2019\u201d Hermanus said. \u201cWe probably wouldn\u2019t have been able to make this film when we wanted to, in 2022, because they weren\u2019t the Paul Mescal and Josh O\u2019Connor that we now know today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Mescal added, \u201cHow many times do you hear people who really try and get something made over five, 10, 15 years, and it just falls away? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/paul-mescal-starstruck-by-josh-oconnor-1235120039\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1235120039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I remember feeling very lucky<\/a>. Like, we have to enjoy this. Because we\u2019ll come across other opportunities in our life where we love a script as much as this, and we just don\u2019t get to get it made. The thing that I\u2019m most proud about is that the feeling I had when I read the script for the first time is what I got when I saw the film for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mescal teased that the film has a \u201creal sense of companionship\u201d between the two lead characters, and that the drama stems from the \u201cjoy and loss that comes with the presence and absence of that.\u201d Mescal said, \u201cIt\u2019s not just about sex and the intensity of falling in love. It\u2019s deeper than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to \u201cThe History of Sound,\u201d Mescal will star in the four-part <a data-id=\"1235114408\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-lennon-supports-harris-dickinson-beatles-biopic-1235114408\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beatles biopic<\/a> as Paul McCartney. O\u2019Connor will be in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/breaking-news\/rian-johnson-knives-out-3-title-1235008850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">third \u201cKnives Out\u201d feature<\/a>\u00a0(all we know is that he\u2019s playing a priest, much like Mescal\u2019s other queer drama co-star, \u201cAll of Us Strangers\u201d actor Andrew Scott, did in \u201cFleabag\u201d) and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/breaking-news\/the-mastermind-first-look-josh-oconnor-1235119231\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading\u00a0Kelly Reichardt\u2018s latest, \u201cThe Mastermind,\u201d<\/a> which also will debut in competition at Cannes. Between \u201cThe History of Sound\u201d and \u201cThe Mastermind,\u201d O\u2019Connor has two shots at being in a Palme d\u2019Or winner this year. He also will make his Steven Spielberg debut in the auteur\u2019s next project about UFOs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe History of Sound\u201d will be released in theaters from MUBI, though a release date has not yet been set.
