Montenegro has set itself a deadline of end-2026 to close all remaining negotiating chapters with the European Union, amid warm words from Brussels about the prospects of accession.<\/p>\n
Of the 12 chapters so far closed since 2012, nine were finished in the past two years under the government of Prime Minister Milojko Spajic. There are 33 in total; closing them all will require concrete results on corruption and the rule of law, and a prolonged period of political and economic stability.<\/p>\n
Spajic says he hopes that in 2028 Montenegro will become the third ex-Yugoslav republic to join the bloc, following Slovenia and Croatia.<\/p>\n
