This year\u2019s drama lineup reflected a striking range of tones and ambitions, from auteur-driven literary adaptations to unexpected cross-genre filmmaking. The award was accepted by Zhao and producer Steven Spielberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved the book [by Maggie O\u2019Farrell], but I felt there was really only one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell the story of Agnes and Will and the spirits of the earth and the forest,\u201d said Spielberg. We\u2019re here because of you and we love you and miss you.\u201d The filmmaker went on to share a conversation she had with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/awards\/consider-this\/paul-mescal-beatles-movies-merrily-we-roll-along-interview-1235171207\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHamnet\u201d actor Paul Mescal<\/a> earlier that day. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said that making \u2018Hamnet\u2019 made him realize that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are, not who we ought to be, and to give ourselves fully to the world. Even the parts of ourselves that we\u2019re ashamed of, or that we\u2019re afraid of, or that are imperfect. So the people we speak to, they can also learn to see themselves and fully accept themselves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Other nominees included Netflix\u2019s fresh take on \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d from Guillermo del Toro and a trio of Neon-backed contenders: Jafar Panahi\u2019s \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d and Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d Warner Bros. rounded out the field with Ryan Coogler\u2019s \u201cSinners,\u201d a release that blurred the line between prestige period piece and vampire horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look around this room, and here\u2019s so many of you that I have known for many, many years, my incredible fellow nominees,\u201d Zhao continued. \u201cI see so many of you have become so strong and tender at the same time. You have shared so much of yourselves in your work to the world. So I salute your bravery and I salute your dedication. Let\u2019s do this together. Let\u2019s keep our hearts open. Let\u2019s keep seeing each other. Let\u2019s keep allowing ourselves to be seen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Earlier, \u201cHamnet\u201d star Jessie Buckley won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture \u2013 Drama, and her co-star Mescal was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. Zhao, who was also honored with a nod for Best Director \u2013 Drama, saw her film earn six total nominations \u2014 including Best Screenplay and Best Original Score. <\/p>\n<p>The night\u2019s final category was announced by four-time Golden Globe honoree George Clooney and two-time winner Don Cheadle. The actors jokingly bickered about their history with the ceremony, with Cheadle remarking that Clooney hadn\u2019t won since 2026 winner Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet was 3 years old. <\/p>\n<p>Best Picture \u2013 Drama entered the weekend without a clear consensus favorite. Several nominees arrived with strong critical support, others with significant festival momentum, and many with performances that could factor heavily into upcoming Academy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/awards\/\" id=\"auto-tag_awards\" data-tag=\"awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awards<\/a> conversations.
