As part of an annual review of fees and charges, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liverpool-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Liverpool Council<\/a> is proposing hiking up the cost of an on-street parking space by as much as 20% in some places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was confirmed last year after a lengthy delay, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/end-free-parking-after-6pm-32058791\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"free parking after 6pmLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">free parking after 6pm<\/a> would come to an end, meaning all on-street spaces within the city centre controlled parking zone (CPZ) would have charges applied until 11pm. After consultation with businesses, if agreed by the local authority\u2019s cabinet when it meets next week, the length of stay for any space will increase to five hours after 6pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a report to be considered by city leaders, the wider increase of fees and charges will \u201csupport financial recovery and sustainability\u201d for the local authority. Studies by Liverpool Council said the prices being sought indicate the charges \u201cremain competitive compared to other core cities and private sector operators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When the cabinet meets next week, members will be asked to endorse plans to increase the price of a parking ticket by an average of 11%. Parking before 6pm will be limited to four hours maximum stay, increasing to five hours after, as revealed by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"ECHO Link opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">ECHO <\/a>in December, following consultation with businesses <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/boost-one-liverpools-cultural-hot-33113897\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"particularly around Hope Street.Link opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">particularly around Hope Street.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This charge will rise from \u00a310 to \u00a310.60 from April 1. Council owned car parks, including at Mount Pleasant, Victoria Street, the M&amp;S Bank Arena and Paddington Village are also expected to go up by an average of more than 8%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a report to members, the council set out its reasoning: \u201cThe proposed increases will generate additional income to reinvest in transport infrastructure, and recover increasing costs associated with enforcement, maintenance, and technology upgrades.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2_Council-parking-meter-outside-the-Cunard-BuildingLiverpool.jpg\" alt=\"Liverpool Council has launched a concultation into extending parking charges in the city centre past their current 6pm cut-off\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"A Council pay &amp; display sign outside the Cunard Building.\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">A Council pay &amp; display sign outside the Cunard Building.(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;On-street charges will remain cheaper than the Core Cities average, and Off-street car parks will remain cheaper than the average fee for private sector car parks in Liverpool for the majority of parking periods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">According to the council\u2019s analysis, forecasts suggest an under-recovery of total parking and enforcement income against a budget of more than \u00a34m.
