Romeo + Juliet (1996)<\/p>\nA bespoke BFI IMAX programme has been curated by Academy Award and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman, Saltburn) to complement the release of her sweeping romantic drama,\u00a0Wuthering Heights (2026), coming to the UK\u2019s largest screen at BFI IMAX in IMAX with Laser from 13\u00a0February.<\/p>\n
This limited engagement at BFI IMAX features a tailored programme of four titles selected from a longer list of 13 \u2019Love Stories\u2019 curated by Fennell especially for the BFI, offering insight into the artist\u2019s inspirations and a taste of what audiences might expect from her highly anticipated imagining of Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s beloved novel. The films, chosen by Fennell to play on the UK\u2019s largest screen each Sunday throughout February, will include\u00a0Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996),\u00a0Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann, 1996),\u00a0The Handmaiden Director\u2019s Cut (Park Chan-wook, 2016) and\u00a0The Beguiled (Sofia Coppola,\u00a02017).<\/p>\n

Writing exclusively for the BFI, Fennell said: \u201cSince its publication 200 years ago, critics have challenged\u00a0Wuthering Heights\u2019s validity as a love story. It is too shocking, too cruel, too narratively strange to slip neatly into the world of romance, but it is a love story nonetheless. While researching it, I rewatched many of my own favourite \u2018love stories\u2019, ones that challenged, subverted, even obliterated the conventions of the genre. These are stories which put the love story under duress, which stick a needle into the strawberry trifle, which show love in all its freakish, gory\u00a0detail.\u201d<\/p>\n
We are delighted that Fennell will also join us in person at BFI Southbank on 4 February for the special event,\u00a0Wuthering Heights: Emerald Fennell in Conversation, when she will discuss her experience of filming her big screen version of\u00a0Wuthering Heights before it opens at BFI IMAX in IMAX with Laser on 13 February. A bold and original imagining of \u201cone of the greatest love stories of all time\u201d, Fennell\u2019s\u00a0Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie as Cathy and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, whose forbidden passion for one another turns from romantic to intoxicating in an epic tale of lust, love and\u00a0madness.<\/p>\n
