Progress on this agenda is non-negotiable and will be the measure of whether we secure long-term industrial peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Teachers are being balloted in a dispute over class contact time\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/VI23XTLCCFN6NLG5SQVVMFQJOI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Teaching unions have welcomed the latest pay award, but say that &#8216;excessive workloads&#8217; must now be addressed. (PA\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Ulster Teachers\u2019 Union General Secretary Jacquie White said: \u201cWhilst we had hoped for more, we believe this offer to be reasonable given the current financial constraints facing the public sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">National Association of Head Teachers president Joanne Whyte thanked the Education Minister Paul Givan for his efforts to make the funding available, but said the \u201cfinancial relief\u201d did not solve all problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOur focus now turns to the host of other significant issues including, of course, the intolerable levels of school leader workload and shortfalls in school funding, both of which continue to undermine the sustainability of school leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The management side of the Teacher\u2019s Negotiating Committee said the agreement was an example of \u201cpositive industrial relations in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Representing the different education employment authorities, a spokesperson said: \u201cWe believe that this pay award underscores the value we place on the teaching profession and acknowledges their critical role in securing better outcomes for our children and young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Education Minister Paul Givan launched the draft of the Executive Early Learning and Childcare Strategy on Wednesday\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/QIWP5SCWSFOADH65NKVKRYW5GM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Education Minister Paul Givan. (Liam McBurney\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Givan said the settlement would now see the starting salary for graduate teachers increase to \u00a332,916 with an experienced teacher at the top end of the payscale moving to \u00a350,876.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis brings teachers in Northern Ireland onto broadly comparable scales to their counterparts in England and Wales,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s pay award reflects the value that I place on those working in education, despite the severe financial issues facing education and the wider public sector in Northern Ireland.
