Ukrainian troops from the 92nd Assault Brigade have captured a\u00a0Russian T-80BVM main battle tank during combat operations, according to\u00a0a\u00a0statement released by\u00a0the brigade on\u00a0January 13, 2026. <\/p>\n

The vehicle was seized<\/a> after being disabled in\u00a0battle and subsequently taken as\u00a0a\u00a0war trophy in\u00a0cooperation with the brigade\u2019s tank battalion. The unit released photographs showing the captured vehicle, a\u00a0rare example of\u00a0the Russian military\u2019s most advanced T-80 variant currently deployed in\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the brigade, the tank features several upgrades characteristic of\u00a0the T-80BVM modification, including a\u00a0125mm 2A46M-4 main gun, the 2E58 gun stabilizer, and the TVN-5 driver\u2019s night vision system. <\/p>\n

It\u00a0is\u00a0also equipped with a\u00a0modified autoloader capable of\u00a0handling depleted uranium armor-piercing shells\u2014specifically the 3BM59 \u201cSvinets-1\u201d and 3BM60 \u201cSvinets-2\u201d rounds.<\/p>\n

The vehicle\u2019s protection suite includes Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor blocks on\u00a0the hull and turret sides, and Relikt armor modules on\u00a0the turret front. <\/p>\n

It\u00a0also features an\u00a0improvised cage armor structure\u2014commonly referred to\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cmangal\u201d\u2014designed to\u00a0detonate incoming FPV drones before impact. This grid-like frame extends over the turret sides and engine compartment.<\/p>\n

Propulsion is\u00a0provided by\u00a0a\u00a0GTD-1250 gas turbine engine, and internal communication is\u00a0managed by\u00a0the R-168-25U-2 \u201cAkvaduk\u201d VHF radio system\u2014part of\u00a0Russia\u2019s broader Ratnik soldier modernization program.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0data from Oryx, an\u00a0open-source intelligence group that tracks visually confirmed losses, Ukrainian forces have captured<\/a> at\u00a0least 35\u00a0T-80BVM tanks since the start of\u00a0Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in\u00a02022. The model represents one of\u00a0Russia\u2019s most advanced active-duty main battle tanks, originally modernized by\u00a0the Omsk Transport Machine-Building Plant.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Forbes reported<\/a> that Ukraine may have achieved localized tank superiority over Russian forces for the first time since the full-scale invasion, thanks to\u00a0large-scale drone operations. In\u00a0areas where Ukraine fields multiple drone companies, Russian tanks reportedly fail to\u00a0reach attack positions and are destroyed deep behind the front.<\/p>\n
