Director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong> and her team shot at the farmhouse and in the nearby \u201cblack-and-white\u201d village of Weobley during summer 2024, using this quiet corner of Herefordshire to stand in for Tudor Stratford-upon-Avon<\/strong>. The River Wye and surrounding Tudor-era landscapes also appear on screen, giving the whole area a ready-made itinerary for film buffs keen to trace the production\u2019s footsteps.<\/p>\n

Cwmmau is a striking timber-framed Jacobean farmhouse with a stone base, leaded windows and massive oak beams that make the past feel unusually close. Many original features survive, including stone, oak and elm floors and an old kitchen complete with bread ovens and traditional stoves, alongside a separate modern kitchen tucked along the hall for self-catering ease.<\/p>\n

The house sleeps up to 10 guests in five bedrooms, including several doubles and two four-poster beds that lean into the period-drama fantasy. There are two bathrooms and plenty of large, character-filled rooms where groups can gather by night after exploring the countryside by day.<\/p>\n

For production designer Fiona Crombie<\/strong>, Cwmmau was \u201can amazing Tudor house\u201d whose intact original features made it a dream location for Hamnet\u2019s late sixteenth-century world. The team spent weeks on site repainting, planting gardens, re-fencing and constructing barn structures so that every frame looked convincingly period on camera.<\/p>\n

Because the building is a National Trust<\/a> <\/strong>holiday rental, interiors had previously been modernised, so the art department temporarily reversed many updates before the shoot to restore a more authentic look. When filming wrapped, the production left a tangible legacy: funding helped pay for sensitive restoration work, while prop apple trees and stretches of wooden fencing remained to enhance the farmhouse\u2019s historic feel for future guests.<\/p>\n

Cwmmau Farmhouse<\/strong> sits on the National Trust\u2019s Brockhampton Estate<\/strong> in a remote corner of the Welsh Marches, approached via narrow, uneven country lanes that add to the away-from-it-all atmosphere. The house is wrapped in fields, wildflower meadows and woodland, with footpaths and a bridleway running right past the door \u2013 and on clear days there are views towards the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outside, guests have use of a large enclosed, lawned garden and patio, maintained by National Trust<\/a> <\/strong>volunteer gardeners who may be tending borders during your stay. The cobbled courtyard, nearby pond and low beams inside are all part of the property\u2019s charm, but the Trust notes that they can be slippery or low in places, and that bats may roost in the building \u2013 very on-theme for a centuries-old farmhouse.<\/p>\n
