{"id":695505,"date":"2026-01-14T14:01:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/695505\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T14:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:01:14","slug":"anti-corruption-agencies-target-former-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/695505\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-corruption agencies target former PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Prime Minister <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/yulia-tymoshenko\/t-39428834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yulia Tymoshenko<\/a> said on Wednesday that her party&#8217;s office had been raided overnight as <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine\/t-17295382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>&#8216;s anti-corruption bodies announced a sweeping probe into political corruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strictly speaking, Ukraine&#8217;s NABU anti-corruption agency did not name Tymoshenko when announcing its suspicions against a &#8220;party leader&#8221; in the national parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, it released a blurred\u00a0video and still images showing a blond-haired woman with a distinctive braided hairstyle that could only be one of the most recognizable silhouettes in 21st-century Ukrainian politics.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tweet embed\" data-id=\"2011364002899640786\"\/>\n<p>Who is Yulia Tymoshenko?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tymoshenko was a leader of the so-called Orange Revolution of 2004 and served as prime minister in two stints between 2005 and 2010.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She ran against <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/volodymyr-zelenskyy\/t-65603134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> in the country&#8217;s last presidential elections in 2019,\u00a0her third failed attempt to claim the position,\u00a0and has clashed with him at several points during his presidency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 65-year-old leads the Batkivshchyna or &#8220;Fatherland&#8221; party, which has 25\u00a0seats in Ukraine&#8217;s Verkhovna Rada parliament. This party has broadly similar stances on key foreign policy issues\u00a0\u2014\u00a0like <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-war-in-ukraine\/t-60931789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>, NATO and the EU \u2014\u00a0as the now much larger\u00a0Servant of the People that came to power amid Zelenskyy&#8217;s rapid politcal rise.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"72626892\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/72626892_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko (2-R) speaks to her representative Andrey Portnov during a session of the Supreme Administrative Court in Kiev, Ukraine, 19 February 2010.\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>In 2010, Tymoshenko unsuccessfully appealed the presidential election results at the Supreme Court Image: Sergey Dolzhenko\/dpa\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>After losing the 2010 presidential election to pro-Russian candidate Viktor Yanukovych, she was jailed for abuse of power on charges connected to a gas deal signed with Moscow. Her backers, as well as several rights groups and Western governments, called that conviction politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>Suspicion of &#8216;offering illicit benefits&#8217; to MPs, Tymoshenko calls allegations a &#8216;PR stunt&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) accused the unnamed political party leader of &#8220;offering illicit benefits&#8221; to lawmakers in exchange for loyal votes in parliament. It said that a pretrial investigation had begun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It published a video showing officers in the office opening envelopes stuffed with US dollars in front of the\u00a0woman.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations can carry a maximum jail term of 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Tymoshenko issued a statement saying investigators had searched the offices of her party overnight, calling the raid a &#8220;PR stunt&#8221; and a &#8220;political hit job.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than 30 heavily armed men, without presenting any documents, effectively seized the building and took staff hostage,&#8221; she alleged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also said that\u00a0phones, parliamentary documents and &#8220;personal savings&#8221; were seized, saying &#8220;I categorically reject all the absurd accusations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The investigation and raids follow a series of corruption scandals putting pressure on the war-torn country and its government, probably most notably when <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/zelenskyy-ally-andriy-yermak-resigns-amid-corruption-probe\/a-74944632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zelenskyy&#8217;s top aide, Andriy Yermak, resigned in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the country&#8217;s record on political corruption is a key requirement for Ukraine&#8217;s goal of gaining European Union membership. US President Donald Trump has also raised the issue in critical tones several times\u00a0since his return to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>EU pledges new support plan, former PM Shmyhal takes over energy portfolio\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also on Wednesday, the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/european-commission\/t-17455066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a> announced a two-year loan plan for Ukraine worth roughly \u20ac90 billion (roughly $105 billion), roughly two-thirds of which is earmarked for military support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all want peace for Ukraine and for that Ukraine must be in a position of strength,&#8221; Commission President <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/t-70279537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> said in Brussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Kyiv, another former Ukrainian prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, changed portfolios again from defense minister to the key position of energy minister, as Russian strikes continue to tarket Ukraine&#8217;s power network. Shmyhal had been prime minister for most of Zelenskyy&#8217;s tenure as president, before moving to the Defense Minstry in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>One day earlier, lawmakers\u00a0had surprisingly blocked Shmyhal&#8217;s appointment, but a repeat vote in parliament on Wednesday went the other way.
