{"id":695659,"date":"2026-01-14T15:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T15:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/695659\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T15:41:14","slug":"europe-once-again-dominates-passport-power-ranking-with-30-countries-in-the-top-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/695659\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe once again dominates passport power ranking, with 30 countries in the top 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  By&amp;nbsp<b>Dianne Apen-Sadler<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n                    Published on                 14\/01\/2026 &#8211; 16:04 GMT+1<br \/>\n                \u2022Updated<br \/>\n                                     16:23\n                                        <\/p>\n<p>While European countries made up the majority of the top 10 in this year\u2019s Henley Passport Index, Singapore clung onto the number one spot for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Two other Asian countries tied for second place \u2013 Japan and South Korea \u2013 with visa-free access to 188 destinations, compared to Singapore\u2019s 192.<\/p>\n<p>The index, which uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on how many destinations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/08\/22\/end-of-an-era-for-passport-stamps-new-eu-entry-system-will-register-travellers-digitally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>passport<\/strong><\/a> holders can visit without applying for a visa in advance, is now in its 20th year.<\/p>\n<p>Five European countries came in third place, with access to 186 countries: Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/11\/26\/dark-skies-and-empty-itineraries-why-sweden-wants-travellers-to-embrace-boredom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sweden<\/strong><\/a> and Switzerland. <\/p>\n<p>Just below them, with access to 185 destinations, were Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/10\/22\/strong-rise-in-non-eu-tourists-boosts-greeces-travel-sector-amid-drop-in-eu-visitor-number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Greece<\/strong><\/a>, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the top five were Hungary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/10\/24\/world-travel-awards-portugal-voted-best-destination-in-europe-for-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Portugal<\/strong><\/a>, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>Still a long way to go for some European nations<\/p>\n<p>While 30 European countries are in the top 10, there are still some passports lagging behind the others.<\/p>\n<p>Passport holders from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/12\/08\/dictators-testing-the-borders-of-europe-belarus-opposition-leader-tells-euronews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Belarus<\/strong><\/a> have visa-free access to just 79 countries, placing them in 60th place, while those from Kosovo only fare slightly better with access to 81 countries, ranking them 59th alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/03\/18\/china-is-now-visa-free-for-europeans-take-a-high-speed-train-to-futuristic-cities-and-fabu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>China<\/strong><\/a> and Botswana.<\/p>\n<p>While there is still a long way to go before reaching the global average, Kosovo has made significant gains in recent years, rising 38 places in the rankings since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Changes for passport holders in the rest of the world<\/p>\n<p>The biggest climber of the past 20 years is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/11\/20\/can-you-enjoy-dubai-on-a-budget-uae-city-wants-to-dispel-misconceptions-about-cost-of-a-ho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>United Arab Emirates<\/strong><\/a>, which now ranks fifth having climbed 57 places in that time. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, the UAE was in 10th place, and the change means that the country has overtaken the UK, which is down in seventh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/12\/10\/planning-a-us-trip-travellers-may-soon-need-to-make-their-social-media-history-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The US<\/strong><\/a> is now 10th, with access to 179 countries. This is the same ranking as in 2025, when the country fell to its lowest-ever position in the index\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Christian H.
