The 12-track collection, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/matadorrecords.com\/blogs\/news\/coming-march-13-kim-gordon-play-me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">due out on March 13<\/a>, is full of melodic beats while also featuring the influence of krautrock.<\/p>\n<p>Play Me finds Gordon turning a critical eye on the current political climate in the United States, as well as the effect modern technology, specifically AI, is having on humanity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/kim-gordon-tracks-down-rumors-of-free-speech-on-ecrp-in-new-york-city-filmed-video-directed-by-daughter-coco-gordon-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[RELATED: Kim Gordon Tracks Down \u2018Rumors of Free Speech\u2019 on \u201cECRP\u201d in New York City-Filmed Video Directed by Daughter Coco Gordon Moore]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The album continues Kim\u2019s collaboration with producer Justin Raisen, who also worked on her first two solo efforts\u2014No Home Record (2019) and The Collective (2024).<\/p>\n<p>Regarding collaborating with Raisen on Play Me, Gordon said in a statement, \u201cWe wanted the songs to be short. We wanted to do it really fast. It\u2019s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics and he understands how I work\u2014that came forth even more on this record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave Grohl contributed drums to a track titled \u201cBusy Bee.\u201d The song features a sample of Kim talking with her Free Kitten bandmate Julia Cafritz during a 1990s media appearance. The audio clip is modified to transform the conversation into high-pitched squeaks.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon has released <a href=\"https:\/\/kimgordon.lnk.to\/nottoday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a track called \u201cNot Today\u201d<\/a> as the first advance single from Play Me. The song features slightly eerie indie-pop instrumentation set to a driving beat. A music video for the tune has debuted at Gordon\u2019s official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M8_2lYNURu4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About \u201cNot Today\u201d and Its Companion Video<\/p>\n<p>Kim said of the way she approached her vocals for \u201cNot Today,\u201d \u201cI started singing in a way I hadn\u2019t sung in a long time. This other voice came out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video was directed by filmmakers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who also are the founders of the Rodarte fashion label. The clip features Gordon dancing around a suburban home wearing tulle dress custom-made for her by the Mulleavy sisters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was our idol and we vividly remember fitting the dress with her in NYC,\u201d the siblings said in a joint statement. \u201cWhen we started to conceptualize the video, Kim brought up wearing the dress, which we knew was perfect for the video idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Zoom conversation about the \u201cNot Today\u201d video between Gordon, the Mulleavy, and the film\u2019s director of photography, Christopher Blauvelt, has been posted on Kim\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vDOfm2NCYwc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More About \u2018Play Me\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Play Me also features \u201cByebye25!,\u201d a remake of The Collective\u2019s lead track, \u201cBye Bye.\u201d The new song incorporates terms from a list of banned words President Trump\u2019s administration flagged in canceling grant and research proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Another new song, \u201cDirty Tech,\u201d laments the potential havoc AI might wreak in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was kind of musing about, is my next boss going to be an AI chatbot?\u201d Gordon offered. \u201cWe\u2019re the first ones whose lights are going to go out\u2014not the tech billionaires. It\u2019s so abstract that people can\u2019t comprehend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Play Me can be <a href=\"https:\/\/kimgordon.lnk.to\/playme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pre-ordered now<\/a>.
