But while some saw success leaning into local funders, others had to tap connections in Silicon Valley hubs to close the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Read on for the latest funding rounds and other money moves shaping Pittsburgh\u2019s startup scene.<\/p>\n<p>Diamond Kinetics raises $12M for youth sports\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local startup Diamond Kinetics has raised $12 million in growth financing to expand its sportstech platform for youth baseball and softball, according to cofounder and CEO CJ Handron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The round, led by Elysian Park Ventures \u2014 a global investment platform created by the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers \u2014 will be used to expand Diamond Kinetics\u2019 AI-powered live-streaming platform sidelineHD, which it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/diamond-kinetics-accelerates-innovation-in-youth-sports-technology-with-acquisition-of-sidelinehd-302082146.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment enables us to scale sidelineHD,\u201d Handron said, \u201cstrengthen our development capabilities, deepen our content services and expand on our responsibility as <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/diamond-kinetics-mlb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLB\u2019s Trusted Youth Development Platform<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The North Shore-based company was founded in 2014 when the concept of \u201csportstech\u201d was still in its infancy. Since then, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/diamond-kinetics-mlb-founder-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised over $30 million<\/a> and developed the DK Bat Sensor, which tracks a player\u2019s swing data to provide performance stats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYouth sports are at an inflection point,\u201d Handron told Technical.ly, \u201cand technology can play a meaningful role in improving access, development and engagement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local foundation invests $350k in spine injury tech<\/p>\n<p>The Richard King Mellon Foundation is betting on a local medical device startup for its promising head and neck immobilization device.<\/p>\n<p>In December, the foundation approved a $350,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rkmf.org\/funding-programs\/social-impact-investments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social-Impact Investment<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/headstraitlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HeadStrait Labs<\/a>, according to senior communications officer at RK Mellon, Tim Reeves. The startup raised $100,000 in 2024 from Innovation Works\u2019 accelerator program.<\/p>\n<p>Additional funding from the raise will be used to prepare for large-scale manufacturing and grow the team, according to Squire. In December, the company also <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/astrobotic-17-5m-nasa-reusable-rockets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured $17.5 million<\/a> from NASA to test and expand reusable rockets.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>CMU spinout NovoLINC raised a <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/novolinc-raise-data-center-cooling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$10.2 million seed round<\/a> to help cool overheating data centers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/autonomous-vehicle-tests-pennstart-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$100 million state-of-the-art facility<\/a> to test self-driving cars at the Westmoreland Innovation Center broke ground in December.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Local startup Efficient Computer Corp., which develops general-purpose computer processors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2002716\/000200271625000002\/xslFormDX01\/primary_doc.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $53.7 million<\/a>, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A term sheet seen by Reuters showed SoftBank and Nvidia are looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/softbank-nvidia-looking-invest-skild-ai-14-billion-valuation-sources-say-2025-12-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invest more than $1 billion<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/skild-brain-unveiled-ai-human-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skild AI<\/a> at a $14 billion valuation.
