{"id":696491,"date":"2026-01-15T00:19:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T00:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/696491\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T00:19:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T00:19:13","slug":"amazing-nurse-who-treated-mother-and-sons-cancers-33-years-apart-praised-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/696491\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Amazing\u2019 nurse who treated mother and son\u2019s cancers 33 years apart praised \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A mother has heaped praise on a Glasgow cancer nurse who treated both her and her son for children\u2019s cancer, more than three decades apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stephanie Muirhead, 46, and her son Andrew, 14, both received life-saving cancer care at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC) hospitals, where they were both cared for by nurse Angela Howat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In 1990 Mrs Muirhead underwent treatment for a cancerous tumour on her spine at Yorkhill Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some 33 years later Andrew was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumour at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/yellow-warnings-for-snow-and-ice-still-in-place-as-wintry-weather-continues-6OQ7B3PR4NPQ7JXN3DZ2DPHYIA\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Yellow warnings for snow and ice still in place as wintry weather continues\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768436350_593_ZFBQ3E52WZOV3OIKSAFNK5CTGY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/holidaymakers-at-newcastle-airport-face-delays-as-runway-decimated-by-snow-ZJZV2VQ6YBKP5CEEPMKY62J66Y\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Holidaymakers at Newcastle airport face delays as runway &#x2018;decimated&#x2019; by snow\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768436351_352_6TYY5WZUH5LZNJK42RNOKTTHE4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Andrew\u2019s symptoms began in May 2023 and when they persisted into the summer holiday his GP referred him to RHC, where an MRI scan revealed a mass in his brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His mother explained: \u201cWhen they started using dye for the scan, I knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSoon after, one of Andrew\u2019s neurosurgeons explained that Andrew needed urgent surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt felt like he was in theatre for an eternity. The neurosurgeon removed most of the tumour but left a thin layer to avoid damaging Andrew\u2019s muscles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe were told further treatment would include chemotherapy and proton therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Andrew\u2019s recovery was challenging and he needed physiotherapy to strengthen his neck, and later required a wheelchair during chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His mother said the chemotherapy \u201creally knocked him out\u201d and that he lost weight and needed help with eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She praised the \u201cincredible\u201d hospital staff who had cared for her son \u2013 giving a special mention to Angela Howat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe place runs like a well-oiled machine. You just keep going and then you look back and realise how amazing everyone has been,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Angela Howat was with Andrew as he rang the cancer bell at the end of his treatment\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PUPT5MTSGRMBBL64KN3EJTGVDU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>Angela Howat was with Andrew as he rang the cancer bell at the end of his treatment <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve made friendships for life, especially with nurse Angela Howat, who treated us both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI was cared for in ward 7A at Yorkhill Hospital by an amazing team of nurses, including Ann Clarkin, Gillian Paton \u2013 and Angela.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone in that ward was amazing. I wish I could name and thank them all!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ms Howat, a neuro oncology clinical nurse specialist at NHS GGC, spoke of the \u201clasting bonds\u201d that form between clinical staff and patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAt the beginning of my career, I cared for Stephanie when she was a young girl, supporting her throughout her treatment and rehabilitation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThirty\u2011three years later, I had the privilege of stepping into a new role as a neuro\u2011oncology nurse specialist and caring for her son, Andrew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAndrew received intensive rehabilitation from the physiotherapy, occupational therapy and neuro\u2011oncology multidisciplinary teams, and has shown remarkable strength, resilience and quiet determination in returning to school and embracing life to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCaring for two generations of the same family has been very emotional and a powerful reminder of the lasting bonds formed with patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">RHC was recently recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre for Excellence for its outstanding care for children with brain tumours, including its \u201ccohesive, wrap-around support\u201d through each child\u2019s treatment journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Roddy O\u2019Kane, who was one of Andrew\u2019s neurosurgeons, reflected on the many different areas of expertise needed to treat children with cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cChildren\u2019s cancer care is truly multi-disciplinary, involving nurses, surgeons, oncologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, play specialists, teachers and volunteers,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAndrew\u2019s journey shows the strength of this team and his own remarkable resilience. We\u2019re all proud of him and wish him well for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In summer 2024 Andrew was told he is currently cancer-free and he will continue to have regular scans to monitor it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His mother has been cancer-free since finishing her own treatment in July 1990 and has annual checks at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mrs Muirhead said before Andrew\u2019s surgery she promised to get him a gift once it was all over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe asked for a dog and now Benny is part of our family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Andrew was also nominated by his community nurses for a Dream Flight trip to Florida, where he visited Disneyland and Universal Studios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His mother said: \u201cWe couldn\u2019t believe it when the charity accepted.
