{"id":696886,"date":"2026-01-15T04:34:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T04:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/696886\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T04:34:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T04:34:18","slug":"were-just-weeks-away-from-sending-people-to-the-moon-for-the-first-time-in-53-years-news-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/696886\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re just weeks away from sending people to the moon for the first time in 53 years | News Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/space-men-slow-43ef.gif\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26285154\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tOne small step for man\u2026 again (Picture: Metro)<\/p>\n<p>One ticket to the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/the-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moon<\/a>, please. <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA <\/a>has revealed the exact date that humanity will step foot once again on the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US<\/a> space agency said yesterday that a crew will set off for our cosmic neighbour \u2018no earlier\u2019 than February 6. <\/p>\n<p>Four astronauts will do a lap around the moon before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean after 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>Officials admitted, however, that given that everything from the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/weather\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weather<\/a> to rocket performance could stop the mission, it\u2019s more like a day between January 31 and February 14\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Artemis, NASA\u2019s return-to-the-moon programme, has been plagued by delays, technical hiccups and budget cuts for years. <\/p>\n<p>This has all but <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2019\/07\/20\/many-people-landed-moon-10430709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied generations of astronauts <\/a>their chance at walking where <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/galleries\/17-facts-about-the-moon-landing-55-years-later-21260812\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neil Armstrong once did in 1969<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_280768264-b5bd-e1768398415446.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26285146\" alt=\"Photograph of Buzz Aldrin (1930-) an American engineer and former astronaut. (Photo by: Universal History Archive\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tBuzz Aldrin was one of the first two humans to land on the moon (Picture: Universal Images Group Editorial)<\/p>\n<p>The last time humans were casually strolling \u2013 or moonwalking, we suppose \u2013 on the moon was for the 1972 Apollo 17 mission. <\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> made bringing American space boots back on the lunar ground a goal during his first administration, signing Artemis in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Space officials were tasked with working with commercial companies like <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/elon-musk\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a>\u2019s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/spacex\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> to build a lunar-orbiting Gateway outpost.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s first mission, known as Artemis I, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/12\/12\/nasa-successfully-completes-artemis-i-flight-around-the-moon-17920633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">involved an un-crewed Orion capsule doing a 1.3million mile lap<\/a> around the moon in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike\u00a0the Apollo missions, the second Artemis mission won\u2019t actually land on the moon. <\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it will be the first to leave Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in 53 years.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_278201456-d958.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26280157\" alt=\"FILE - In this photo provided by NASA, Artemis II crew members, from left, Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman and Christina Koch, stand together at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in front of an Orion crew module on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023. Waning Gibbous Moon, Clayfield Copse, Berkshire, UK - 04 Jan 2026\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Moon is nearly 240,000 miles away (Picture: Geoffrey Swaine\/Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>A career as an astronaut doesn\u2019t just involve handing over a CV and cover letter to NASA. <\/p>\n<p>Meganne Christian, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/23\/inside-life-a-reserve-astronaut-become-one-22544170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency,<\/a> told <strong>Metro <\/strong>that spacefarers have to undergo rather oddly specific training. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s particular training for sleeping.
