{"id":697632,"date":"2026-01-15T12:31:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/697632\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T12:31:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:31:17","slug":"london-boroughs-could-see-major-financial-boost-from-tourist-levy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/697632\/","title":{"rendered":"London boroughs could see major financial boost from tourist levy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Image\/London-boroughs-could-see-major-financial-boost-from-tourist-levy\/tower_bridge\/jpg\" alt=\"London boroughs could see major financial boost from tourist levy image\" class=\"img-responsive img-full\"\/>Tower Bridge, London. \u00a9 Richie Chan \/ Shutterstock.com.<br \/>\n        The overnight visitor levy could generate more than \u00a3350m for the capital, research has found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/centrallondonforward.gov.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Overnight-visitor-levy-impact-assessment-3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>A report<\/strong><\/a> by Central London Forward (CLF), a partnership of the 12 central London local authorities, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Budget-Mayors-to-get-tourist-tax-power-boost\/63501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>tourist tax<\/strong><\/a> has the potential to raise annual revenue of \u00a3275m for CLF boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>With councils calling for a minimum of 50% of the revenue, CLF says this would help alleviate the rising costs created by tourism that overstretch council budgets.<\/p>\n<p>The CLF\u2019s analysis found that the tax would support Central London boroughs in the sustainable management of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgov.co.uk\/Call-for-visitor-levies-to-combat-austeritys-effects\/62808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>visitor pressures<\/strong><\/a>, even if it was a \u2018modest, globally standard levy\u2019 that was introduced.<\/p>\n<p>It also suggests that the levy would help to expand the visitor economy and preserve essential community services.<\/p>\n<p>Outlining two \u2018internationally common approaches\u2019, the report reveals that a \u00a32 per person per night flat rate would generate \u00a3169m annually for CLF boroughs, while a 3% room cost charge would unlock \u00a3275m per year, with the latter suggested to be a \u2018fairer\u2019 method due to its automatic adaptation based on inflation and demand.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Adam Hug, Chair of Central London Forward and Leader of Westminster City Council, said: \u2018Central London boroughs play a crucial role in ensuring the visitor economy grows and thrives.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We work to keep the streets clean, well maintained and safe, we invest in new public realm projects from the transformation of Regent Street to upgraded public loos in my own borough and we work with businesses to give them the support they need to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Many of these services for visitors are currently funded by our local residents which is not right.
