{"id":697655,"date":"2026-01-15T12:49:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/697655\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T12:49:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:49:22","slug":"british-officer-among-troops-sent-to-greenland-as-us-talks-stall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/697655\/","title":{"rendered":"British officer among troops sent to Greenland as US talks stall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A British military officer is among an international group of European forces being deployed to Greenland after negotiations in Washington failed to deliver a breakthrough on President Trump\u2019s demands to own the territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the request of the Danish government, there is one UK military officer that is part of this reconnaissance group,\u201d John Healey, the defence secretary, said late on Wednesday after Denmark and at least four other Nato allies said they would send troops. <\/p>\n<p>The hastily convened military deployment, part of a larger exercise called Operation Arctic Endurance, will involve soldiers, naval vessels and aircraft from Denmark, and small numbers of unarmed or lightly armed personnel from Germany, France, Norway and Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>Healey acknowledged Trump\u2019s claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/russia\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> and China were rivals for supremacy in the Arctic circle. \u201cWe share President Trump\u2019s concern about the security of the high north. And you see this as part of Nato and JEF nations stepping up to reinforce security in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/comment\/the-times-view\/article\/arctic-greenland-trump-nato-2xjf7bmkp\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high north<\/a> \u2014 stepping up, with stronger exercising, to deter the Russian aggression and the Chinese activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">There are already 1,500 British troops, mainly Royal Marines on commando manoeuvres operating out Camp Viking in Norway, who are expected to take part in new exercises in Greenland over the coming days or weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The British commando force includes a consignment of new snowmobiles, worth \u00a310 million, \u201cfor reconnaissance and raiding operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Royal Marine force will be based at Skjold for the next ten years. \u201cThey continue to be at the tip of the Arctic spear,\u201d said a Royal Navy statement. The British deployment includes the Yeovilton-based commando helicopter force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Norway confirmed that it was sending two officers and Germany, which described the deployment as a \u201creconnaissance\u201d mission, will send 13 personnel. President Macron also confirmed on Thursday that France would take part. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThe first French military elements are already en route. Others will follow,\u201d Macron said on X. The latest mission has been described as a \u201creassurance initiative\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TIMES PHOTOGRAPHER JACK HILL<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The mission, which began on Wednesday and will last until Saturday, was pitched in vague terms as a reassurance initiative to boost security in the Arctic and lay the groundwork for larger naval surveillance operations in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Danish defence ministry said further exercises this year might include guarding \u201cinstallations critical to society\u201d as well as fighter jet deployments and naval operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Troels Lund Poulsen, the Danish defence minister, declined to give details on the scale of his country\u2019s contribution but said it was a step towards a \u201cmore permanent presence\u201d on Greenland. Asked whether the soldiers would defend the island against an American invasion, Poulsen said it was a \u201chighly hypothetical question\u201d and he did not believe it was likely that one Nato ally would attack another.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark will increase its military footprint in Greenland, says defence minister<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">On Wednesday Trump said Nato ought to be \u201cleading the way\u201d for the US to acquire Greenland because it would make the alliance \u201cfar more formidable and effective\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He also argued that America needed the territory to realise his vision of an elaborate \u201cGolden Dome\u201d missile defence system, which he has pledged to establish by 2029 with the capacity to shoot down \u201calmost 100 per cent\u201d of any cruise or ballistic missiles aimed at the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/link.thetimes.co.uk\/join\/74t\/signup-us?source=WebsiteArticle\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Sign up for The Times\u2019s weekly US newsletter<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he would be briefed after the press conference but repeated his claim to \u201cneed Greenland for national security\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe\u2019re gonna see what happens,\u201d Trump said. He argued that US interest in acquiring Greenland was \u201cnot anything so new\u201d, citing President Truman, who tried unsuccessfully to buy the territory after the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Trump added that he had spoken to the Nato chief Mark Rutte. \u201cAnd he really wants to see something happen,\u201d Trump said, without further detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Since decapitating the Maduro regime in Venezuela on January 3, Trump has doubled down on his pursuit of Greenland, arguing that a US takeover is the only way to keep China and Russia out of the island. The caption read: \u201cWhich way, Greenland man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Afterwards Rasmussen said the \u201cfrank but constructive\u201d talks had not overcome the \u201cfundamental differences\u201d between the two sides. He also said that Greenland would remain part of Denmark \u201cfor the foreseeable future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t manage to change the American position,\u201d Rasmussen said. \u201cIt\u2019s clear the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland [sic]. We made it very clear that this isn\u2019t in the interest of the kingdom of Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/us\/news-today\/article\/greenland-trump-us-denmark-news-308c9cxnm\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Trump envoy disinvited from Greenland dog-sled race<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rasmussen said that the issue would be addressed by a \u201chigh-level working group\u201d that would meet \u201cwithin weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe agree that it makes sense to sit down on a high level and explore whether there is the possibility to accommodate the concerns of the [US] president while we respect the red lines of the kingdom of Denmark,\u201d he said. \u201cWhether that is doable, I don\u2019t know. I hope it could take down the temperature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rasmussen said it was \u201cabsolutely not necessary\u201d for the US to annex Greenland because Denmark would look kindly on any requests to expand the American presence on the island. He denied Trump\u2019s claim that China had sent warships into the area, saying no Chinese naval vessels had been observed there in more than a decade, and said that strict investment screening meant there was \u201cno Chinese presence in Greenland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Motzfeldt was more reserved, saying Greenland wished to \u201cstrengthen co-operation\u201d with America but \u201cthat doesn\u2019t mean we want to be owned by the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Hours earlier several European leaders had issued their strongest condemnations yet of Trump\u2019s maximum-pressure tactics. President Macron is said to have told his cabinet that any American attempt to capture Greenland would lead to a \u201ccascade\u201d of \u201cunprecedented consequences\u201d and that France would be obliged to take unspecified \u201cactions\u201d against it. The French president also said the seriousness of Trump\u2019s threats should not be underestimated, and Paris announced that it would open a consulate in Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The leaders of the European parliament issued a statement \u201cunequivocally condemning\u201d Trump\u2019s rhetoric, which they described as a \u201cblatant challenge \u2026 to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a Nato ally\u201d. \u201cSuch statements are unacceptable and have no place in relations between democratic partners,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Greenlanders protest US annexation bid, holding a &quot;Yankee Go Home!&quot; banner and Greenlandic flags.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\/dbf63e80-7e21-4176-a69f-98c1612c2756.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Greenlanders protesting in in March last year against Trump\u2019s remarks on the sovereignty of their country<\/p>\n<p>AHMET GURHAN KARTAL\/ANADOLU\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It is expected that further European Nato members will join the Greenland mission over the coming days, albeit possibly with token deployments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Poulsen, the Danish defence minister, framed it as a sequel to last summer\u2019s Arctic Light exercise, which involved Denmark\u2019s Jaeger Corps special forces alongside 550 troops from allies including France, Germany, Sweden and Norway. He said it was a \u201cclear priority\u201d for Denmark to bolster Nato\u2019s military presence in the High North \u201cat a time when no one can predict what will happen in security policy terms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/comment\/the-times-view\/article\/arctic-greenland-trump-nato-2xjf7bmkp\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The Times view: The Arctic must be the subject of calm debate between allies<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Greenlandic government said it \u201cattached great importance\u201d to having Nato strengthen the territory\u2019s security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Denmark and Greenland\u2019s efforts to cultivate a critical mass of opposition to Trump\u2019s plan within the Republican Party also appear to be bearing fruit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A number of senior figures in the party, including John Thune, the majority leader in the Senate, have broken cover to warn against a military intervention. This dispute is likely to play out on the floor of Congress. <\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">One Trump loyalist has introduced a bill that would authorise the president to add Greenland to the US.
