{"id":698026,"date":"2026-01-15T16:39:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/698026\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T16:39:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:39:10","slug":"greenlands-defence-is-common-concern-for-nato-danish-pm-says-as-european-troops-fly-in-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/698026\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenland\u2019s defence is \u2018common concern\u2019 for Nato, Danish PM says as European troops fly in | Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said Greenland\u2019s defence was a \u201ccommon concern\u201d for the whole of Nato, as troops started arriving from across Europe as a result of Donald Trump\u2019s threats to take the Arctic island by force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Troops from France, Germany, the UK,<strong> <\/strong>Norway and Sweden, among others, were on their way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a>, a largely autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark, on Thursday. Denmark also announced it would be increasing its military presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It comes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/jan\/14\/denmark-greenland-us-latest-news-updates-europe-live-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after a difficult meeting<\/a> in Washington on Wednesday between the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Vivian Motzfeldt and Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, and the US vice-president, JD Vance, and secretary of state, Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The visit was intended to smooth relations between Denmark and Greenland and the US, but it did not appear to have had the desired effect. Afterwards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/14\/greenland-us-trump-talks-denmark\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump reiterated<\/a> his previous comments that the US \u201cneeds\u201d Greenland for national security, adding that Denmark could not be relied on to protect the island and that \u201csomething will work out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement released on Thursday, Frederiksen said it was \u201cnot an easy meeting\u201d and that a working group was now being set up to discuss how Arctic security could be improved.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark will also be strengthening its military presence in Greenland, the prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, says. Photograph: Kristian Tuxen Ladegaard Berg\/NurPhoto\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHowever, that does not change the fact that there is a fundamental disagreement because the American ambition to take over Greenland is intact,\u201d she added. \u201cThis is obviously serious and therefore we continue our efforts to prevent that scenario from becoming a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There was, she said, agreement within Nato that \u201ca strengthened presence in the Arctic is crucial for European and North American security\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She added that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/denmark\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a> had \u201cinvested significantly in new Arctic capabilities\u201d, while \u201ca number of allies\u201d were taking part in joint exercises \u201cin and around\u201d Greenland. \u201cThe defence and protection of Greenland is a common concern for the entire Nato alliance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland\u2019s prime minister, said the first meeting marked \u201can important step\u201d and that \u201cdialogue is now under way\u201d. However, he stipulated that dialogue with the US was dependent on \u201crespect for our constitutional position, for international law, and for our right to our own country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nielsen also reiterated several points including that Greenland was \u201cnot for sale\u201d, would not be owned by, governed by or be part of the US, and was a \u201cdemocratic society with self-government\u201d, part of the kingdom of Denmark and, in turn, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/nato\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nato<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Danish military plane ion the runway at Nuuk, Greenland, on Thursday  Photograph: Evgeniy Maloletka\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The French president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/emmanuel-macron\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>, announced on Wednesday that the first members of the French military were \u201calready en route\u201d and that \u201cothers will follow\u201d. About 15 French soldiers from the mountain infantry unit were already in Nuuk, Greenland\u2019s capital, for a military exercise, French authorities said. Meanwhile, Germany on Thursday said it would deploy a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel to Greenland. The Netherlands and the UK have also said they will take part in the joint exercises led by Denmark under the name \u201coperation Arctic endurance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While a significant moment in terms of symbolism, the total number of troops will be in the dozens and the duration of the deployment is unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Danish defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, said on Thursday that he planned to establish \u201ca more permanent military presence\u201d on Greenland \u201cwith a larger Danish contribution\u201d. Military personnel from multiple Nato countries would be in Greenland on a rotation system, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After the high-stakes meeting in Washington, L\u00f8kke Rasmussen said there continued to be a \u201cfundamental disagreement\u201d over Greenland, adding that it remained \u201cclear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s and Greenland\u2019s foreign ministers, Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Vivian Motzfeldt in Washington this week. And there\u2019s not a thing Denmark can do about it, but we can do everything about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Danish and Greenlandic politicians gathered in Copenhagen on Thursday to celebrate Greenlandic New Year\u2019s Eve.
