The taste-off involved 68 coffee lovers sampling 12 different<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/i-tested-five-supermarket-brand-33852819\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\"> instant gold-roast-style coffees<\/a>, including offerings from Nescaf\u00e9 and other well-known brands, as well as nine supermarket own-brands such as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/asda\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Asda<\/a>, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/lidl\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Lidl<\/a>, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/waitrose-ltd\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Waitrose<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/sainsburys\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Sainsbury&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The testers were most taken with two supermarket own-brand instant coffees: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/marks-spencer\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">M&amp;S<\/a> and Waitrose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Both M&amp;S and Waitrose&#8217;s own-brand instant coffees received the same score, securing them joint first place, while Nescaf\u00e9 and Douwe Egberts shared second place. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/aldi\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Aldi<\/a> also earned a nod for Great Value, as its coffee was enjoyed by all testers and came in cheaper than other highly ranked instant coffees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">M&amp;S&#8217;s Gold Instant Coffee tied for first place, scoring 70% and priced at \u00a37.25 for 200g, which bagged it a Best Buy status. While it&#8217;s not the cheapest supermarket own-brand coffee, it still undercuts Nescaf\u00e9, Douwe Egberts and Kenco, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/food\/2157532\/best-instant-coffee-supermarkets\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">the Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Testers praised the coffee for its flavour, aroma and appearance. This Best Buy instant coffee was praised for its appearance, aroma, and flavour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Over half of the testers deemed the coffee&#8217;s strength just right, and nearly two-thirds relished its bitterness. While not the cheapest option, Waitrose&#8217;s offering is still more wallet-friendly than some well-known brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Douwe Egberts Pure Gold secured joint second place, scoring 69% and costing \u00a38 for 190g. The popular coffee brand was well-received by the testers, who appreciated its look, aroma and flavour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Just over half of the testers savoured the level of bitterness, although opinions varied on whether it should have been more or less bitter. Almost half were satisfied with the flavour, but a third desired a stronger taste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Again, Nescaf\u00e9 isn&#8217;t a bargain, but if it&#8217;s your preferred coffee brand, keep an eye out for offers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Aldi&#8217;s Alcafe Gold Roast came in third place, scoring 68% and costing a reasonable \u00a32.65 for 200g. The coffee earned a Which? Great Value award as it is significantly cheaper than the other high-scoring coffees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Overall, this instant coffee&#8217;s aroma, flavour and appearance were well-received by the testers, with nearly two-thirds approving of the bitterness levels. The brand&#8217;s coffee was commended for its appearance, aroma and flavour, with about half finding the coffee flavour spot on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Nevertheless, a third of the testers craved a stronger flavour.
