{"id":698494,"date":"2026-01-15T21:31:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T21:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/698494\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T21:31:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T21:31:11","slug":"mayor-to-push-london-council-tax-precept-above-500-to-fund-policing-and-rail-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/698494\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor to push London council tax precept above \u00a3500 to fund policing and rail plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mayor of London is raising the GLA\u2019s take from London\u2019s council tax to fund an increase in policing and support the potential West London Orbital railway link.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/8400e186.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/london-city-hall.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-86862\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"336\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/london-city-hall-1024x569.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In total, the Mayor is proposing that council tax increases by an additional \u00a320.13 a year for an average Band D household, subject to final approvals next month. Consequently, the Band D council tax payable in the 32 London boroughs (the adjusted precept) is proposed to increase by 4.1% from \u00a3490.38 in 2025-26 to \u00a3510.51 in 2026-27.<\/p>\n<p>That means for an average Band D resident, the Mayor\u2019s precept on their council tax will break the \u00a3500 barrier for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>If approved, Londoners will fund the Mayor\u2019s spending budget to the tune of \u00a31.66 billion, of which just over \u00a31 billion will be spent on policing and crime prevention, in addition to Home Office funding for the police of \u00a32.9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Around \u00a3251 million will go to TfL, and a similar amount to the London Fire Brigade.<\/p>\n<p>The draft budget also confirms that the Department for Transport will compensate TfL for the loss of income arising from its 2026 fares decision, providing \u00a390 million in direct funding to TfL for the 2026-27 to 2028-29 fares cycle.<\/p>\n<p>In other transport news, a package of \u00a3400,000 is being allocated to the OPDC to continue work on getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ianvisits.co.uk\/articles\/tag\/west-london-orbital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West London Orbital railway<\/a> business case ready for submission to the government.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Mayor raises \u00a31.66 billion from Londoners in the council tax precept, the GLA\u2019s total expenditure is much higher, at \u00a322.7 billion, because it includes TfL revenues and other sources, such as government funding for the police, investments, and other sources.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor\u2019s Draft Budget covers the Mayor\u2019s Office for Policing and Crime (including the Metropolitan Police Service and the Violence Reduction Unit), TfL, the London Fire Brigade, the London Legacy Development Corporation (Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park), the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, the Oxford Street Development Corporation and the core Greater London Authority, including the London Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>This comprises a revenue budget of \u00a317.3 billion and a draft capital spending plan of \u00a35.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some other funding decisions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mayor has earmarked \u00a32.5 million to cover increased costs at the London Stadium in the event that West Ham United are relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Oxford Street project has seen its funding increased to \u00a327.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>To cover the cost of the May 2028 elections, a \u00a340 million reserve has been set aside for 2028-29.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: \u201cBearing down on crime and keeping Londoners safe is my top priority as Mayor.
