The European Union (EU) on Friday (May 2, 2025) called on New Delhi<\/a> and Islamabad to show \u201crestraint\u201d and pursue dialogue to defuse tensions amid speculation about India\u2019s possible retaliation against Pakistan in view of the cross-border linkages to the Pahalgam terror attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following separate phone conversations with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said the rising tensions between the two neighbouring countries are \u201calarming\u201d and the escalation of the situation helps \u201cno one\u201d.<\/p>\n

On his part, Dr. Jaishankar welcomed the EU\u2019s \u201cstrong condemnation\u201d of terrorism in all forms and manifestations.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s call for restraint to India and Pakistan came two days after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the two countries to work together to de-escalate tensions<\/a> over the Pahalgam terror attack.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rubio spoke to Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Dr. Jaishankar on Wednesday (April 30, 2025) amid escalating tensions between the two neighbouring countries over the April 22 Pahalgam strike, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Citing \u201ccross-border linkages\u201d to the horrific attack, India has promised severe punishment to those involved in it.<\/p>\n

At a high-level meeting with the top defence brass, Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> asserted on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) that the armed forces have \u201ccomplete operational freedom\u201d<\/a> to decide on the mode, targets and timing of India\u2019s response to the terror attack, according to government sources.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister affirmed that it is a national resolve to deal a crushing blow to terrorism, the sources said after the meeting.<\/p>\n

India on April 23 announced a raft of punitive measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty<\/a>, shutting down the only operational land-border crossing between the two countries at Punjab\u2019s Attari and downgrading diplomatic ties, in view of the cross-border links to the Pahalgam attack.<\/p>\n

In response, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian airliners<\/a> and suspended all trade with India, including through third countries.<\/p>\n

Pakistan also rejected India\u2019s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and said any move to stop the flow of water will be seen as an \u201cact of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Friday (May 2, 2025), Dr. Jaishankar also spoke to Switzerland\u2019s Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and discussed the Pahalgam attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanked him for his support and solidarity. We agreed on zero tolerance for terrorism,\u201d the Minister said in a social media post. <\/p>\n
