(ABC News: Nicholas Martyr)<\/p>\n<p>Team examines all options<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">University of Melbourne research fellow in coastal processes Andrew Pomeroy, who is acting as a consultant on the project, said the investigation would also look at dune reconstructions, seawalls, and contemporary solutions, including reef enhancements or the artificial reef option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everything&#8217;s on the table, and then we progressively take things off the table as we look at what we&#8217;re trying to do, how we&#8217;re trying to do it and the different levers we can pull,&#8221; Dr Pomeroy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Whatever we do in any particular location will have much wider implications.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to just install a reef at the expense of supplying sand or moving sand movements around. (ABC News: Kenith Png)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Western Australia, an <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-12-30\/artificial-reef-trial-tackling-coastal-erosion\/104573680\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104573680\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial reef at a dog beach was expanded<\/a> in 2024, after an initial installation proved effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">University of WA research associate Justin Geldard said artificial reefs were not the only solution, but could be used alongside beach nourishment and other hard engineering measures.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s more attractive to the public because they can see that positive effect that it&#8217;s having,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The community at CY O&#8217;Connor [Beach] have loved the recreation side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s created a snorkelling and diving habitat and brought a lot of marine species in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A cylindrical concrete structure with holes, atop some mulch.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/341e0e3c70b35ef079eb35f350dd9fb9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Artificial reefs can be created in a variety of ways, including concrete structures. (ABC News: Kenith Png)<\/p>\n<p>Implementing could be difficult<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Coastal engineer Aaron Salyer said artificial reefs broke waves offshore, reducing their impact on the shoreline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of finding this balance between allowing some of the wave energy to come in, but taking out the big sting of it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When you create habitat, you create the ecology, and that has potential flow-on effects for eco-tourism and additional fishing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, Dr Pomeroy said implementing an artificial reef at Robe could be difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You have very small, isolated beach environments,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It becomes quite difficult to implement a reef in that environment relative to larger, very straight coastlines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A water damaged road with waves coming under a fence and lapping against it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f199837fb7c9628919027b594968422e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Storms last year caused significant damage at Fox Beach.
