{"id":699658,"date":"2026-01-16T10:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T10:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/699658\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T10:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T10:19:11","slug":"rooney-picks-next-man-utd-manager-as-xabi-alonso-ruled-out-for-one-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/699658\/","title":{"rendered":"Rooney picks next Man Utd manager as Xabi Alonso ruled out for one reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wayne Rooney has picked his preferred option to lead Manchester United on a permanent basis next season and offered his thoughts on the appointment of Michael Carrick on an interim basis at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<p>United confirmed on Tuesday that Carrick will take charge of the club for the rest of the season the current campaign after Ruben Amorim was given his marching orders earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/tag\/wayne-rooney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rooney<\/a><\/strong> and Carrick won five Premier League titles together under Sir Alex Ferguson and the former Red Devils striker believes the caretaker boss is \u201cthe right choice at this moment in time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is probably the obvious choice really because I don\u2019t think there are any top, top managers available at the minute,\u201d he said on the latest edition of BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is the right choice at this moment in time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a difficult task of course. Where Manchester United are at the minute is not a good place and Michael has to go in and steady the ship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/man-utd-new-manager-cant-sell-bruno-fernandes-summer-wilcox-ratcliffe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Man Utd will find it easier to find a new manager than a new Bruno Fernandes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carrick\u2019s short-term appointment grants the United chiefs time to assess who to appoint on a permanent basis in the summer and Xabi Alonso has emerged as a candidate after he was sacked by Real Madrid earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>But Rooney reckons he will wait for the Liverpool job to become available and instead believes United should be going after Thomas Tuchel, who will lead England to the World Cup this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlonso did incredible at Leverkusen and I think you have more chance of him sitting and waiting and hoping with [Liverpool manager Arne] Slot,\u201d Rooney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League, has won trophies. He is doing well at England. Time will tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rooney insists Carrick\u2019s calm demeanour hides a \u201cfun\u201d side to his personality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael\u2019s great fun. He is a great character, but don\u2019t be fooled by how calm he looks,\u201d Rooney added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can have fun as well, but make no mistake, he\u2019d be going in there now with full focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United are currently seventh in the Premier League having won just one of their last six games and Carrick\u2019s first assignment is a brutal one as Manchester City travel to Old Trafford on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a massive game for the club, for Michael,\u201d Rooney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what he will do is bring a bit of calmness, a bit of grit to the game, which I think is needed.
