Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has admitted he did not understand why Antoine Semenyo’s goal against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg was disallowed. The Blues were leading 1-0 at the time thanks to a close-range Semenyo goal when they thought the Ghana international had scored again from a corner.<\/p>\n
As the ball came into the area, Semenyo<\/a> managed to flick it beyond Nick Pope and into the back of the net. Initially it seemed the goal would be awarded but VAR<\/a> intervened. Back at Stockley Park, the officials believed Erling Haaland<\/a> had stopped the goalkeeper from saving Semenyo’s effort.<\/p>\n This is despite Pope being wrong-footed. After a delay of five minutes, referee Chris Kavanagh was instructed to go to the monitor where the goal was disallowed. He said: “We need a little bit of luck in those moments, but if luck becomes important, we need to be really good because for me, maybe I am the only one, I don’t get why Manchester City’s goal was disallowed against Newcastle<\/a>,” he said.<\/p>\n “But it didn’t influence the result because they were able to score afterwards and still win.” While the incident did not affect the outcome on the night, it could still play a factor in the tie as the Blues lead by a two-goal margin heading into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium<\/a>.<\/p>\n Antoine Semenyo thought he had scored his third goal for Manchester City only for VAR to rule it out(Image: )<\/p>\n Slot is not the only rival to have been left backing City following the incident.
