Police have issued an appeal for the public’s help<\/p>\n

A 64 year-old man was viciously attacked and knocked unconscious outside a fast-food takeaway in Manchester, with police now issuing an appeal to the public.<\/p>\n

His devastated family said he was taken to hospital in a critical condition and remains seriously ill under treatment at Manchester Royal Infirmary. They said he suffered a fractured skull and jaw, fractured ribs and a collapsed lung in the attack, which happened following a New Year’s Day night out.<\/p>\n

Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. His family said the grandfather was ‘left for dead’ after the incident. The attack happened outside the Dixy Chicken takeaway on Old Church Street in Newton<\/a> Heath.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police<\/a> said emergency services responded at around 1am on January 2 to reports the man had been seriously injured. The force said it’s believed he was punched and kicked as he lay on the ground. No arrests have been made as yet.<\/p>\n

The man’s family said they believe a number of men were involved in the attack – and said he was airlifted from North Manchester General Hospital to the MRI after his lung collapsed.<\/p>\n

In a statement, GMP said: “Shortly after 1am on 2 January, officers responded to reports that a man had been seriously injured in an assault on Old Church Street, Newton Heath<\/a>, Manchester.<\/p>\n

“It is believed that the man was attacked outside a takeaway, being punched and kicked to the ground. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.<\/p>\n

“Enquiries are currently ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101 or gmp.police.uk, quoting log 126 of 02\/01\/26.<\/p>\n

“This includes anyone who saw something at the time, or believes they have knowledge of the incident.
