The Foreign Ministry is advising<\/a> Russian citizens to avoid travel to Moldova due to alleged \u201cdiscrimination\u201d and \u201charassment\u201d from Moldovan border guards.<\/p>\n

In a statement released Friday, the ministry accused security personnel at the airport in Chisinau of subjecting Russians to \u201chumiliating searches and checks\u201d that were often followed by denials of entry under \u201cflimsy pretexts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chisinau International Airport staff also \u201cartificially delayed\u201d inspections of Russian passengers, forcing them to miss outbound flights, the ministry claimed.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Ministry said some of its citizens had undergone \u201cforced detention at the border and criminal prosecution without convincing evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also claimed that Moldovan authorities had ignored diplomatic requests to gain access to Russian citizens, making it \u201calmost impossible to provide consular support.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry strongly recommends that Russian citizens take into account the mentioned risks and, if possible, refrain from traveling to the Republic of Moldova,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

It was not immediately possible to verify the claims. The Moscow Times contacted Moldova\u2019s Foreign Ministry for comment.<\/p>\n

Moldova,\u00a0a landlocked country of 2.4 million with a Russian-speaking minority, began formal negotiations to join the European Union in 2024.<\/p>\n

Authorities in the country have\u00a0accused the Kremlin of spending hundreds of millions of dollars to interfere in its elections.<\/p>\n
